Monreale, Palermo, Palazzina Cinese and Mondello Private Tour
Eight hours of history, markets, and coastline across Palermo's most iconic landmarks
This private tour of Palermo and Monreale covers eight full hours of curated sightseeing, from a UNESCO-listed cathedral to a sun-drenched beach resort, all guided by a dedicated English-speaking driver who adapts the route to your interests.
The itinerary moves through centuries of layered history: Norman palaces, Byzantine mosaics, baroque churches, and Arab-origin street markets sit within walking distance of one another in central Palermo. Each stop has been selected to give a genuine sense of the city's multicultural past rather than a surface-level overview.
Beyond the urban core, the tour reaches the Parco della Favorita to see the Palazzina Cinese, a royal hunting lodge with unmistakable oriental architecture, before ending at the Gulf of Mondello, where Liberty-style villas line a crescent of white sand at the foot of Monte Pellegrino.
Because this is a private tour, the sequence and pace can be adjusted on the day, making it equally suited to architecture enthusiasts, food market explorers, and families looking for a structured introduction to western Sicily.
Tour Highlights
Visit the Cathedral of Monreale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring over 6,000 square metres of Byzantine mosaics.
Explore the Palazzo dei Normanni, the oldest royal residence in Europe and home to the celebrated Palatine Chapel.
Walk through Ballaró and Capo, two of Palermo's oldest street markets, each with more than a thousand years of trading history.
See the Palazzina Cinese inside the Parco della Favorita, a royal retreat built for Ferdinando di Borbone and later hosting Admiral Nelson.
Arrive at Mondello beach, one of Sicily's most celebrated seaside resorts, sheltered beneath Monte Pellegrino.
Take in a panoramic drive through Palermo covering the Quattro Canti, Piazza Pretoria, Teatro Massimo, and Viale della Libertà.
Admire baroque masterworks at Chiesa del Gesù (Casa Professa) and La Martorana, two of the city's most ornate religious interiors.
Itinerary Overview
The tour opens in Piazza Guglielmo II, where the Cathedral of Monreale displays more than 130 Byzantine mosaics across a decorated surface exceeding 6,000 square metres. From the Belvedere viewpoint, visitors look out over the Conca d'Oro valley, while the adjacent Diocesan Museum houses sacred vestments, liturgical objects, and an eighteenth-century fresco cycle.
Back in Palermo, the route passes through Porta Nuova to reach the Palazzo dei Normanni, the oldest royal residence in Europe and current seat of the Sicilian regional assembly. The Palatine Chapel on the first level and the various courtyards within the palace are among the most visited interiors in all of Sicily. Palermo Cathedral, constructed in 1184 on the orders of Archbishop Gualtiero Offamilio and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015, stands a short distance away.
The Capo Market occupies the site of a fourteenth-century Arab quarter, entered through the Porta Carini gate, and is particularly noted for fresh fish, spices, dried tomatoes, and local anchovies. The route then follows Via Roma past Piazza San Domenico to reach the Teatro Massimo before ascending Corso Vittorio Emanuele to the Quattro Canti intersection.
Piazza Pretoria gathers several significant religious buildings — La Martorana, San Cataldo, and San Giuseppe dei Teatini — alongside the Fontana della Vergogna. The nearby Chiesa del Gesù (Casa Professa) is regarded as one of the finest baroque churches in Palermo. The tour then moves into the Albergheria district for Ballaró, a market with over a thousand years of continuous operation that also contains the panoramic Tower of S. Nicolò and the Church of Carmine Maggiore.
The Parco della Favorita, covering roughly 400 hectares, was established by Ferdinando di Borbone between 1798 and 1802 as a royal hunting reserve. At its heart stands the Palazzina Cinese, originally a private casena renovated by architect Venanzio Marvuglia with clear oriental references; the building hosted Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton among other distinguished guests. The palace is open Tuesday to Saturday from 09:00 to 17:30 and on holidays from 09:00 to 13:30, closed on Mondays.
The tour concludes at the Gulf of Mondello, set between Monte Pellegrino and the sea, where a stretch of sandy beach is flanked by Liberty-style villas, restaurants, nautical clubs, and a small working port. The atmosphere and turquoise water make it the most popular seaside destination for Palermo residents and visitors alike.
