Three different ways to see the Colosseum, and what each one actually includes.
By ToursXplorer Editorial Team
The Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum, stands in the archaeological heart of Rome, drawing crowds daily for its history and its architecture. Below the arena, the underground levels stretch across half a hectare, where fourteen corridors once held the men, animals and machinery hoisted up through trapdoors into the games above. Getting around the amphitheatre and the nearby Roman Forum means crossing ground that is often rocky and uneven, with very steep steps once inside.
Three kinds of visit cover most choices: a standard guided tour, a longer walk that ends at the Colosseum, and arena-floor access. Each covers different ground and different ticket inclusions.
This visit moves on foot from the Colosseum through the Arch of Constantine and up Palatine Hill before finishing in the Roman Forum, led by a local guide throughout in a small group format. Inside the Colosseum, the guide points out the archaeological evidence of Nero's great fire and separates documented history from the stories that have grown around the gladiatorial games. It suits visitors who want a single, well-paced introduction to how the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine fit together, leaving them with a connected picture of the site rather than a series of separate stops.
This tour opens at Piazza del Campidoglio and threads through Trajan's Forum, an underground passage into the Forum of Julius Caesar, the Via Sacra and the Roman Forum, before climbing Palatine Hill and finishing at the Colosseum exterior. It suits travellers who want the fuller arc of ancient Rome's political and civic core, not just the amphitheatre itself, and closes with a guided look at the Colosseum covering its engineering and the range of spectacles once staged there.
This visit pairs a tuk tuk ride past Rome landmarks, including a stop at a local bar, with timed entry to the Colosseum's arena floor, plus access to the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Imperial Fora. A digital audio guide covers the sites at your own pace once the group is on foot. First-time visitors can cover Rome's essentials and the arena floor in one booking, while returning travellers get arena floor access for the first time, all within the same six-hour outing.
| Trip | Duration | In short |

| Capitoline Hill to the Colosseum: a three-hour walk through the Imperial Forums and Via Sacra | 3 hours | This tour opens at Piazza del Campidoglio and threads through Trajan's Forum, an underground passage into the Forum of Julius Caesar, the Via Sacra and the Roman Forum, before climbing Palatine Hill and finishing at the Colosseum exterior. |
| Tuk tuk and arena floor: a six-hour combination tour across Rome ending at the Colosseum | 6 hours | This visit pairs a tuk tuk ride past Rome landmarks, including a stop at a local bar, with timed entry to the Colosseum's arena floor, plus access to the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Imperial Fora. |
The standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket is valid for 24 hours, covering one entry to the first and second levels of the Colosseum at the booked time, without the arena, and one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine; it allows 75 minutes inside the Colosseum. The Full Experience Arena ticket adds the arena floor to the first and second levels and allows 90 minutes inside; the Only Arena ticket is a 20-minute visit to the arena floor alone. The Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket includes the underground, subject to availability, and the arena, allows 90 minutes inside, and is valid for 2 consecutive days. Guided tours of the underground are limited, on an experimental basis, to 7 people per guide, booked with the name of each participant. Every ticket carries a compulsory time slot, is issued in the holder's name, and requires an identity document kept visible at the entrances. Ticket sales with a time slot open 30 days before the visit, and the Full Experience Arena ticket goes on sale online 7 days before and is also sold at the ticket offices on the day. The Colosseum opens at 8:30 am (08:30), and arriving 15 minutes before the booked entry time is advised. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month, on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Paths across the park are often rocky and uneven, the amphitheatre has very steep steps, and appropriate footwear is advised.
Each of these visits covers different ground: one focuses on the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine, another adds the Imperial Forums and Via Sacra, and one combines a city tour with arena floor access. None of them should be expected to cover everything at once, since what is included depends on the ticket type and the route each visit follows.
Skip the walk from the Capitoline Hill if you want the amphitheatre to be the focus: it ends at the Colosseum after the Imperial Forums, the Via Sacra and the Palatine. Skip the six-hour tuk tuk and arena floor combination if you want a shorter, more focused visit, or if you are not interested in the city sections beyond the Colosseum.

See dates & pricesThe tickets differ mainly in which areas they unlock. The standard ticket covers the first and second levels without the arena; the Full Experience Arena ticket adds the arena floor; the Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket adds the underground as well, subject to availability. The Only Arena ticket is the narrowest option, a brief 20-minute visit to the arena floor with nothing else attached, a poor fit if you also want the Forum or Palatine included.
A guide adds the context the ticket alone does not; two of the visits here also walk the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill with the guide.
The Full Experience Arena ticket adds the arena floor to the first and second levels and allows 90 minutes inside the Colosseum.
Ticket sales with a Colosseum time slot open 30 days before the visit; the Full Experience Arena ticket goes on sale online 7 days before and is also sold at the ticket offices on the day.
The time allowed inside the Colosseum is 75 minutes on the standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket and 90 minutes on the Full Experience tickets. The Roman Forum and Palatine take extra time where a visit includes them.
These visits were selected from our catalogue to represent distinct ways of seeing the Colosseum, from a standard guided overview to arena floor access, cross-checked against official park information on tickets and opening arrangements.
