Tour on the Hills: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains & Ella
From the last royal capital to the misty highlands, a seven-day private journey through Sri Lanka's most captivating landscapes.
This Sri Lanka hill country private tour takes travellers through a succession of UNESCO-listed cities, colonial-era towns, sweeping tea estates and rare highland ecosystems, all at an unhurried pace suited to every level of visitor.
Beginning at the international airport, the route climbs steadily from the cultural heartland of Kandy into the cool altitude of Nuwara Eliya before descending toward the scenic village of Ella. The final leg returns to the coastal metropolis of Colombo, offering a vivid contrast to the mountain scenery encountered throughout the week.
Because the tour operates as a fully private arrangement, sightseeing schedules can be adjusted to suit individual interests, whether that means lingering longer at a tea factory, spending extra time on a forest trail or simply pausing to admire a valley view from a train window.
The itinerary is graded very easy, making it accessible to families, older travellers and those who prefer comfort and scenery over strenuous physical activity, while still including optional treks for those who want them.
Tour Highlights
Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic with a lively bazaar, gem museum and arts centre at the heart of the last royal Kandyan Kingdom.
The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya shelter a giant Javan fig tree, a celebrated Orchid House and sweeping lawns that once served as a royal pleasure garden.
Nuwara Eliya, known as Little England, offers colonial bungalows, the Victoria Golf Course and vast tea plantations set against a backdrop of cool mountain air.
Horton Plains National Park, at over 7,000 feet above sea level, presents the dramatic World's End escarpment, Baker's Falls and the possibility of spotting the Sri Lankan Leopard.
Ella provides access to Mini Adam's Peak, Ella Rock and the iconic Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, each rewarding visitors with panoramic highland views.
A scenic train journey from Kandy toward Nuwara Eliya passes through tea-covered slopes and cascading waterfalls, consistently ranked among the most beautiful rail routes in Asia.
Colombo blends Dutch-colonial architecture, the heritage Dutch Hospital Complex and a dynamic dining and cultural scene into a fitting final chapter of the journey.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
A representative meets you at the airport and escorts you to Kandy, the final royal capital of Sri Lanka before British rule in 1815. The afternoon allows time to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the town bazaar and a gem museum before an overnight stay in Kandy.
A tuk-tuk ride through the city leads to the historic Udawattakele Forest Reserve, a 104-hectare sanctuary noted for its birdlife and its role as a royal garden during the Kandyan era. The afternoon is spent at the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, followed by an evening cultural performance showcasing traditional Kandyan dance and music.
After breakfast, a scenic train journey winds through mountain terrain carpeted with tea bushes and punctuated by waterfalls. Disembarking at Nanu Oya, the journey continues by car into Nuwara Eliya, where the afternoon is free to explore colonial streetscapes, the Victoria Golf Course and the shores of Lake Gregory.
A morning trek through Horton Plains National Park leads to Baker's Falls and the vertiginous World's End, a sheer 3,700-foot drop at the plateau's southern edge. Sambar deer are commonly seen along the trail, and encounters with fishing cats, otters or Sri Lankan Leopard are possible for attentive visitors.
A guided tour of a working tea estate and factory reveals the full process from leaf to cup, concluding with a tasting session overlooking misty valleys. The afternoon transfer to Ella opens the possibility of visiting the Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Rock or Mini Adam's Peak before settling in for the night.
The final travel day takes you to Colombo, where the afternoon is reserved for exploring the Pettah market district, the Dutch Hospital Complex and the city's blend of colonial and contemporary architecture. The evening offers the option to sample fusion cuisine or experience the city's evolving social scene.
