Letchworth Garden City: Self-Guided History Puzzle Walk
Crack the clues, roam the tree-lined streets, and uncover the story behind the world's first Garden City.
This Letchworth Garden City history walk combines outdoor exploration with puzzle-solving to reveal the founding stories, architectural heritage, and unsolved mysteries of a place that changed urban planning forever. Set along a direct rail route between London and Cambridge, it is an ideal day out for curious minds.
Letchworth Garden City was conceived by Ebenezer Howard in the early twentieth century as a radical answer to overcrowded industrial towns. His vision of combining town and country living sparked a global movement, and the streets you walk today still reflect the original blueprint drawn up by planners Raymond Unwin and Barry Parker.
The self-guided format means you set the pace. A series of location-based challenges leads you from landmark to landmark, blending the appeal of an outdoor escape game with the depth of a guided history tour. There is no guide to wait for and no fixed group to keep up with.
Along the way you may spot Letchworth's famous black squirrels, pass a cinema that opened with a black-tie gala in 1936, and stand before a church built in the twelfth century that predates the Garden City itself by seven centuries.

Walk Itinerary
The walk begins at the station, which first opened in 1903 with a restricted service before gaining a full passenger service in 1905. A new station on a different site replaced it in 1913, and your first challenge invites you to look closely at your surroundings before moving on.
Developed with support from a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, Broadway Gardens reflects Ebenezer Howard's original aspirations for the Garden City. The layout and planting are rooted in the same principles that guided the city's founding design.
Built in 1936 to replace the neighbouring Palace Cinema, this venue opened with a black-tie screening of Follow the Fleet. It remains a landmark of the city's cultural history and features a puzzle challenge for walkers to solve.
This Grade II listed church was built in the late twelfth century, long before the Garden City existed, and remains the former Church of England parish church for Old Letchworth. It falls under the Diocese of St Albans.
Housed in the former offices of town planners Raymond Unwin and Barry Parker on Norton Way South, this institute traces how Letchworth's original design influenced Garden City developments around the world. Visitors can see where the city's streets and open spaces were first conceived.
Designed by Courtenay Crickmer and dedicated on 22 February 1908, St Michael's began as a mission church to St Mary's Letchworth before establishing its permanent site on Town Square between 1966 and 1968. It marks the final stage of the puzzle walk route.
