Copenhagen: Little Mermaid Fairy Tale Quest
Follow a mysterious voice through Copenhagen and uncover the city's most enchanting story on foot.
This Copenhagen fairy tale quest transforms the city's most recognisable landmarks into a live chapter of Andersen's famous story. Starting at Kongens Nytorv and ending at the harbour, you follow clues, solve puzzles, and piece together a narrative that is woven into the streets themselves. No guide is needed — only a phone, the Questo app, and a sense of curiosity.
The route covers roughly 4 kilometres, passing through Nyhavn's colourful canal houses, the grand courtyards of Amalienborg Palace, and quieter corners that most visitors walk past without a second glance. Along the way, you will learn where Andersen actually lived and wrote, and why he placed a peculiar note beside his bed each night.
The experience is designed for families and small groups who want to discover Copenhagen at their own pace. You can pause at any point to grab a coffee, explore a side street, or simply take in the waterfront before continuing to the next stop.
The quest draws on Norse mythology as well as Andersen's writing, connecting the landscape of Denmark to the stories that shaped it. The explanation of how the goddess Gefion ploughed through Sweden to create the island of Zealand is one of several unexpected moments that give the walk genuine depth.

Itinerary
The largest public square in Copenhagen marks the starting point of the quest. From here, a mysterious voice begins to guide you through the city.
The national performing arts venue, built in 1874, provides the backdrop for the first chapter of the story. The theatre's architecture and history feed directly into the narrative.
Walk through the canal district to find the house where Andersen lived and wrote some of his most celebrated tales. Learn the reason behind the unusual note he kept beside his bed every night.
These bronze figures emerging from the canal connect directly to the themes of the quest. The mythology surrounding them adds a layer of context to Andersen's own story.
At the royal residence, you must decode a palace password to advance. The square and its four identical mansions offer one of the most striking settings on the route.
The final stop is Edvard Eriksen's bronze sculpture at the harbour, where the quest concludes with the return of the Little Mermaid's voice. The statue has overlooked the water since 1913.
