From the seafront, the full breadth of the Gironde estuary becomes visible, stretching 75 kilometers inland from where the Garonne and Dordogne rivers meet. Place Foch nearby is one of the few spaces that preserves the memory of Royan before the destruction.
The Marcel Canellas Auditorium, with its sweeping shell-shaped facade, faces the Botton Galleries across the seafront esplanade. The galleries themselves replaced an Art Nouveau predecessor and represent one of the more inventive commercial architecture projects of the reconstruction era.
The historic port has served sailors and traders since the Middle Ages, occupying a naturally sheltered position on the Gironde's right bank. Today it remains an active working port while also functioning as one of the most photographed spots on the Charente-Maritime coast.
Foncillon was Royan's first bathing beach, with organized access dating to 1819. The nearby Convention Center, opened in 1957, closes the circuit as one of the defining modernist buildings of the entire reconstruction project.
