The Lochnagar Crater was formed at 7:28 a.m. on 1 July 1916 when British engineers detonated a massive underground mine beneath German positions. The resulting crater, roughly 91 metres across and 21 metres deep, is now a preserved memorial site. Despite the force of the explosion, Allied forces suffered heavy casualties in the advance that followed.
Inaugurated in 1925, this site commemorates the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, which suffered devastating losses on the first day of the Somme offensive. The caribou statue that crowns the memorial is the regiment's emblem. Preserved trenches and shell craters within the park give a rare sense of the terrain as it was in 1916.
