Meteora and Delphi 2-Day Private Trip with Thermopylae
From the oracle of antiquity to the cliffs of the gods, two days that reshape how you see ancient Greece
This private 2-day tour to Meteora and Delphi from Athens traces a route through three of the most historically charged landscapes in Greece, beginning at the sacred sanctuary of Delphi, continuing to the legendary pass of Thermopylae, and culminating at the breathtaking rock monasteries of Meteora. The journey is unhurried, private, and designed for travelers who want depth over speed.
Delphi sits on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassos, roughly two hours from Athens by road. Once considered the center of the known world, it housed the Oracle of Pythia, whose pronouncements shaped the decisions of kings and city-states for centuries. The archaeological site and its museum together offer a compelling portrait of how religion, politics, and geography intersected in the ancient Greek world.
The pass of Thermopylae, where a small Spartan-led force held back the Persian army of Xerxes for three days in 480 BC, remains one of the most evocative military sites in the world. A brief stop here connects the landscape to the story in a way that no textbook can replicate. The monument to the fallen Spartans stands beside the original coastal route they defended.
Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rises above the plain of Thessaly in a series of vertical sandstone columns that reach up to 400 meters. Monasteries built between the 14th and 16th centuries cling to these summits, several of which remain active religious communities today. The combination of geological spectacle and living Byzantine heritage makes Meteora unlike anywhere else in Europe.

Itinerary
The trip begins with departure from Athens toward Boeotia. The first stop is the Byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas, a UNESCO-listed complex renowned for its 11th-century mosaics and its serene setting on the slopes above the Helikon valley.
Continuing to Mount Parnassos, the tour reaches Delphi, where the ancient sanctuary, the Sacred Way, the Temple of Apollo, and the theater are explored on foot. The Delphi Museum houses the Iniochos bronze and a scale model showing the sanctuary at its height. Lunch follows at a restaurant of your choice in Delphi.
The afternoon route passes through the coastal plain to the pass of Thermopylae, where the monument to Leonidas and the Spartan soldiers marks the site of the 480 BC battle. The day ends in Kalambaka or Kastraki, with an overnight stay at a recommended hotel in the Meteora area.
The second morning is devoted to three of the active monasteries perched on the rock pillars of Meteora, including the largest monastic complex and the sole female monastery still in operation. The vertical landscape and the medieval frescoes inside the chapels make this one of the most striking experiences in Greece.
After the monastery visits, the group stops at the National History Museum of Kalambaka before sitting down for lunch at a restaurant in Kastraki, with a direct view of the rock formations. The return journey to Athens follows in the afternoon.
