Nizwa by Night Sightseeing Tour
From the ancient Sumail Gap to the Saiq Plateau, journey through Oman's living history after dark.
This evening tour invites travelers to explore Nizwa night tour from Muscat — a route that winds through mountain passes, a historic fort, a traditional souq, a palm oasis, and finally the elevated Saiq Plateau, once reachable only by donkey.
Nizwa served as Oman's capital during the 6th and 7th centuries, functioning as a hub of trade, scholarship, and art. The city's fort and souq remain among the most intact examples of traditional Omani civic architecture in the country.
Beyond the city, the landscape shifts from date palm groves fed by ancient falaj irrigation channels to the cool air of Jebel Akhdar's Saiq Plateau. This contrast between lowland oasis and highland village encapsulates the geographical and cultural range of interior Oman.
The tour is rated easy and suits travelers of most fitness levels. An evening departure from Muscat keeps the desert heat manageable and gives the old city a quieter, more atmospheric character.
Tour Highlights
Walk through Nizwa Fort, built in the 1650s by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi and the most visited national monument in Oman.
Explore Nizwa Souq, a working market where local artisans trade silver daggers, copper goods, livestock, and handcrafted textiles.
Visit Birkat Al Mouz, a lush palm oasis with panoramic views and one of Oman's oldest functioning falaj water systems.
Ascend to the Saiq Plateau on Jebel Akhdar, a traditional mountain village historically isolated from the lowlands for centuries.
Stop at a heritage coffee house set inside a traditional Omani home and sample locally prepared food and beverages.
Observe the ancient falaj irrigation network, a UNESCO-recognised engineering system that has sustained Omani agriculture for over a thousand years.
Cross the Sumail Gap, the natural mountain corridor that divides the Western and Eastern Hajar ranges and frames Oman's interior landscape.
Itinerary
The tour departs Muscat in the evening and travels approximately two hours to Nizwa. The route passes through the Sumail Gap, the geological corridor separating the Western and Eastern Hajar Mountains.
Arrive at Nizwa Fort, constructed in the 1650s over an underground stream. The fort served as the administrative center for Omani Imams and took roughly 12 years to complete. Its round tower is the largest of its kind in the country.
Adjacent to the fort walls, the souq blends traditional and contemporary architecture across a network of alleys. Visitors can observe and purchase silver khanjar daggers, copper crafts, woven goods, and fresh produce.
Drive through date palm farms to the oasis village of Birkat Al Mouz. A stop at a traditional Omani house includes a local coffee experience, followed by a walk along the ancient falaj water channel and a viewpoint overlooking the oasis from above.
Ascend to the Saiq Plateau, known locally as the Roof of Oman. This cooler highland village was accessible only by donkey for hundreds of years and offers a distinct cultural and scenic contrast to the city below.
The group descends from the plateau and returns to Muscat, completing the full circuit of Oman's historic interior in a single evening excursion.
