Complete Iceland Circle with Snæfellsnes — 9-Day Self-Drive Adventure
From glaciers and black sand beaches to geothermal valleys and volcanic peninsulas — Iceland on your own terms.
This Iceland self-drive ring road tour takes you through nine days of raw, unfiltered Nordic landscapes, from the waterfalls of the South Shore to the geological wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the iconic stops of the Golden Circle.
Covering more than 2,000 kilometres, the route loops around the island following the legendary Ring Road before veering west to explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula — a region that packs glaciers, lava beaches, fishing villages, and towering sea stacks into a single stretch of coastline.
Each night brings a new base, from the fishing harbour of Höfn to the cultural capital of Akureyri, allowing you to explore at your own pace without the constraints of a group schedule. Accommodation is available in Classic guesthouses and 3-star equivalents, or Quality 4-star properties in Reykjavík with the best available options in the countryside.
The itinerary runs from April through October, when daylight hours are generous and most highland roads and glacier access points are fully open to visitors.
Tour Highlights
Walk behind the cascading curtain of Seljalandsfoss and stand before the thundering drop of Skógafoss on Iceland's South Shore.
Witness icebergs drifting across Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and sparkling on Diamond Beach just steps from the Ring Road.
Drive the East Fjords, a lesser-travelled coastline of steep cliffs, narrow inlets, and historic fishing villages with French heritage.
Explore the geothermal marvels around Lake Mývatn, including Námaskarð mud pots, Hverfjall crater, and the Dimmuborgir lava formations.
Stand beneath Snæfellsjökull, the glacier-capped volcano at the tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, set within a national park of remarkable geological variety.
Visit Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where tectonic plates divide and the world's oldest parliament once convened.
Photograph Kirkjufell — Iceland's most recognised mountain — rising beside the twin cascades of Kirkjufellsfoss near Grundarfjörður.
