Sunny Southwest, Rum, Banana, Waterfall and Lighthouse Discovery
A full-day journey through Madeira's warmest coast, from historic lighthouses to hidden waterfalls and local rum distilleries.
This Madeira southwest jeep tour takes you through one of the island's most scenic and culturally rich corridors, covering terraced cliffs, artisan distilleries, banana plantations, and the iconic Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse in a single unhurried day.
Travelling in a small group aboard an open-top 4x4, you gain direct exposure to landscapes that larger coaches cannot access. The format keeps the atmosphere relaxed and allows your guide to adapt the pace to the group's interests at each stop.
The southwest of Madeira receives more sunshine than most other parts of the island, and the route takes full advantage of that, crossing coastal villages, elevated plateaus, and verdant valleys in a single circuit. Each location has been chosen to reflect a different facet of Madeiran life, from fishing traditions to agricultural heritage and maritime history.
Tour Highlights
Visit the Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse, built in 1922 at Madeira's westernmost point, with panoramic Atlantic views from the clifftop.
Discover Anjo's Waterfall near Ponta do Sol, where water cascades down a rocky cliff into a natural pool surrounded by native vegetation.
Explore the Rabaçal valley, home to laurel forest, the Risco waterfall, and the celebrated 25 Fontes springs.
Sample local rum and gin at a traditional distillery, learning about Madeira's centuries-old sugar cane production culture.
Pass through the coastal villages of Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar, and Madalena do Mar, each with its own distinct character and seascape.
Cross the Paul da Serra plateau, the largest in Madeira, offering sweeping views of the island's interior highlands.
Photograph terraced gardens cascading down cliffsides and traditional stone houses that define southwestern Madeiran architecture.
Itinerary
The route begins on the south coast at Ponta do Sol, the sunniest town on the island, sheltered by cliffs and known for its sea views and pebble beaches. From here, a short detour leads to Cascata dos Anjos, a waterfall that drops into a pool enclosed by lush vegetation.
In Calheta, the group visits a working sugar cane distillery where local rum and gin are produced using traditional methods. The area is also known for its banana plantations, and the visit offers insight into the agricultural economy that has shaped this part of the island for generations.
These three coastal villages sit in close succession along the southwest cliffs, each built into steep terrain above the Atlantic. Jardim do Mar is known for its terraced gardens and surfing conditions, Paul do Mar for its fishing community and black sand beach, and Madalena do Mar for its agricultural terraces and tranquil setting.
The jeep climbs to the Paul da Serra plateau, a broad upland that functions as the island's primary water reservoir and supports a rare ecosystem of endemic species. The descent into Rabaçal reveals one of Madeira's most celebrated natural areas, with levada paths leading to waterfalls and laurel forest.
At the westernmost tip of Madeira, the 1922 Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse rises from the edge of dramatic sea cliffs. The site offers unobstructed views over the Atlantic and is a noted location for sunset photography and coastal hiking trails.
The return leg passes through the hillside village of Prazeres, home to a botanical garden and surrounding vineyards, and the quiet village of Rochao in the Calheta municipality. Both offer a glimpse into the slower pace of rural Madeiran life with traditional stone architecture and ocean panoramas.
