Zeus Cave and Lassithi Plateau Full-Day Tour from Agios Nikolaos
A private-style journey through ancient myths, mountain villages, and the flavors of authentic Cretan life
This Zeus Cave and Lassithi Plateau tour takes a maximum of six guests aboard a Land Rover Discovery, offering a markedly different experience from standard coach excursions. Forward-facing leather seats, air conditioning, and a professional guide combine to make a full day in the Cretan highlands genuinely comfortable and personal.
The route winds through the hillside village of Kritza and the Katharo Plateau before climbing to the famous Lassithi Plateau at 840 meters elevation. Along the way, guests encounter olive oil producers, traditional potters, ancient windmills, and a plane tree estimated to be more than 2,400 years old.
The highlight for many visitors is the descent into Dikteon Cave, the legendary birthplace of Zeus, where stalactites, stalagmites, and a still underground lake fill an impressive natural chamber. A traditional Cretan lunch at a family taverna, complete with local wine, rounds out the experience.

Itinerary
The tour departs from Agios Nikolaos, passing the town's well-known lake before heading into the hills. The first stop is a family-operated olive oil factory, where guests taste different varieties and quality grades of extra virgin oil alongside other local products.
A short stop at the historic church offers the chance to view 17th-century frescoes if it happens to be open that day, though access cannot be guaranteed. The tour then continues into the old village of Kritza for a relaxed walk through its traditional lanes.
The Land Rover climbs to the Katharo Plateau, where on a clear day both the Libyan Sea to the south and the Aegean Sea to the north are visible simultaneously. The route crosses the plateau, giving guests a sense of daily life at this high altitude.
At 840 meters elevation, the Lassithi Plateau is home to the legendary Dikteon Cave, the reputed birthplace of Zeus. Guests who choose to enter the cave spend approximately 45 to 60 minutes exploring the caverns, before rejoining the group to see the famous windmills.
A visit to a small village reveals a plane tree of immense age, standing as a local landmark for thousands of years. Guests also stop at a pottery workshop before sitting down to a traditional Cretan lunch at a family taverna.
The return journey passes through the coastal village of Malia and stops at the Monastery of Selinari, considered one of the most attractive monasteries on the island. Visitors are welcome to light a candle if they wish before returning to Agios Nikolaos.
