Don Quixote Tour: La Mancha, Windmills and the Castle of Belmonte
Trace the legendary footsteps of Cervantes across the timeless plains of La Mancha
The Don Quixote Tour from Madrid takes you deep into the heart of La Mancha, the storied region that inspired one of the greatest works in world literature. Over the course of a full day, you will visit the village of El Toboso, the iconic windmills of Mota del Cuervo, and the formidable Castle of Belmonte.
La Mancha is a landscape shaped as much by imagination as by history. The wide open plains, whitewashed villages, and hilltop windmills that Cervantes described in the early 17th century remain remarkably intact, making this one of Spain's most distinctive literary destinations.
This tour is rated easy and suited to a wide range of travelers. A knowledgeable guide accompanies the group throughout the day, providing context that brings both the novel and the region's layered history to life.

Itinerary
The tour departs from Madrid city center accompanied by a guide. The route heads south across the Castilian plateau toward the La Mancha region.
The first stop is El Toboso, a small La Mancha village where Aldonza Lorenzo — the real-world inspiration for Dulcinea del Toboso — is said to have lived. The guided walk traces the path that Don Quixote and Sancho Panza followed through the town's characteristic streets, visiting sites mentioned repeatedly in Cervantes' novel.
The group travels next to Mota del Cuervo, home to seven windmills perched on La Mancha's Balcony: El Zurdo, El Cervantes, El Piqueras, El Gigante, El Goethe, El Iraq, and El Franz Grillparzer. The visit includes access to the interiors of the milling, ethnographic, and craftsmanship windmills.
Lunch takes place in the walled village of Belmonte, allowing approximately one hour and 45 minutes to eat and explore the medieval streets independently. The village itself offers a well-preserved example of a Castilian walled settlement.
Built by order of the Marquis of Villena, Juan Pacheco, in the 15th century, the Castle of Belmonte was later reformed by French Empress Eugenia de Montijo in the 19th century. The guided tour covers the fortress's architecture and its on-site interpretation center.
The group departs Belmonte in the late afternoon for the return journey to Madrid city center, arriving at approximately the same location where the tour began.
