Costa Verde Off-Road Trip from Oristano: Mount Gentilis, Piscinas and Mining Heritage
A full-day 4x4 journey through wild dunes, mountain panoramas, and forgotten mining towns in one of Sardinia's most unspoiled corners.
This Costa Verde off-road tour takes you across 70 kilometres of dirt tracks connecting the peaks of Mount Gentilis to the sweeping dunes of Piscinas Beach, passing through landscapes that blend raw nature with layers of industrial and cultural history. The route is rated easy and suited to anyone looking for genuine Sardinian wilderness without demanding physical effort. It is a day that covers terrain most visitors to the island never reach.
Southwest Sardinia conceals a side of the island shaped by centuries of silver and zinc mining. The area around Ingurtosu and Montevecchio once supported thousands of workers and their families, and the ruins of that era still stand intact among the maquis, giving the landscape an atmosphere found nowhere else on the island.
The route is designed to move between contrasting environments within a single day. Morning light over the Sinis and Iglesiente coastlines from the summit of Mount Gentilis gives way to a midday break by the sea, followed by an afternoon spent among abandoned mine buildings and a village still visited by wild deer. Each stop reveals a different dimension of this territory.

Itinerary
The tour begins in San Nicolò d'Arcidano in the Oristano province. The group departs on dirt tracks heading toward the Guspini highlands and the first major stop of the day.
From the elevated terrain of Mount Gentilis, you take in an expansive panorama over the Gulf of Oristano, the Sinis Peninsula, and the distant Iglesiente ridgeline. This is the highest vantage point of the route and offers a clear sense of the scale of southwest Sardinia.
The group descends to the coast for a midday break in the Portu Maga area. Lunch includes a sandwich or focaccia with filling, water, and coffee, served with the sea in view.
Piscinas is one of the most spectacular beaches in Sardinia, defined by massive sand dunes shaped by the constant Maestrale wind. The stop allows time to walk among the dunes and observe the coastline up close.
Ingurtosu was once a major centre of silver and zinc extraction, and the remains of its processing facilities and worker quarters are still visible across the site. The off-road approach through the scrubland adds to the sense of discovery.
The final stop is the historic mining village of Montevecchio, set within dense woodland where wild deer are frequently spotted near the buildings. The loop concludes with the return to the departure point in San Nicolò d'Arcidano.
