Cairo City Tour: Egyptian Museum, Coptic Churches & Islamic Cairo
Eight hours through three thousand years of history in one remarkable Egyptian city.
This Cairo city tour brings together the ancient, the sacred, and the medieval in a single full-day private excursion guided by a qualified Egyptologist. Visitors explore the Egyptian Museum, the layered religious heritage of Old Cairo, and the atmospheric lanes of the Islamic district. The itinerary is designed for travellers who want depth and context rather than a surface-level overview.
Cairo holds an extraordinary density of world-class landmarks within a relatively compact area. A private format means the pace is set by the group, and every stop receives the attention it deserves rather than being rushed through with a crowd.
The tour covers three distinct historical eras and neighbourhoods, moving from Pharaonic artefacts to early Christian sanctuaries and then into the medieval Islamic city. A knowledgeable guide connects the threads of each period, giving the experience a coherent narrative arc from start to finish.
Tour Highlights
Stand before more than 160,000 ancient artefacts at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.

Itinerary
The tour begins at the Egyptian Museum, located in the heart of Cairo. The building houses more than 160,000 artefacts across two floors, spanning predynastic objects through to the Greco-Roman period. Your Egyptologist guide provides detailed context for the collections, including the royal mummies and the ceremonial objects from elite tombs.
A dedicated portion of the museum visit focuses on the intact burial assemblage of the young pharaoh Tutankhamun, excavated in 1922. The collection includes gold funerary masks, canopic equipment, thrones, and thousands of individual items that remained sealed for over three thousand years. No other royal treasure of comparable completeness has been found in Egypt.
The tour moves into the Coptic quarter of Old Cairo, where the Hanging Church stands above the southern gatehouse of the ancient Roman fortress of Babylon. Nearby, the Church of St Sergius, also called the Cavern Church, is built directly above a crypt associated with the Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. The crypt preserves the site of a well said to have provided water to the family during their stay.
Within the same walled compound, Ben Ezra Synagogue represents centuries of Jewish presence in Cairo. The building functioned as a Coptic church for many years before its conversion, and it is associated with the discovery of the Cairo Geniza, one of the most significant collections of medieval Jewish manuscripts ever found.
The final section of the tour takes in the historic Islamic district, a UNESCO-recognised area containing hundreds of medieval monuments. Highlights include Al-Azhar Mosque, one of the oldest universities in the world, along with ornate sabils, carved stone gates, and narrow alleys that retain much of their medieval character. The guide explains the political and architectural history of the Fatimid, Ayyubid, and Mamluk periods that shaped this neighbourhood.
