Cabo Girão Sea Cliff and Mountains 4WD Experience
Glass-floor cliffs, mountain viewpoints, and the vineyards of Camara de Lobos on one scenic half-day circuit
The Cabo Girão 4WD tour takes you to one of Europe's highest sea cliffs, then deep into the mountain interior of Madeira for viewpoints that reveal the island's dramatic volcanic heart. This easy-rated excursion covers cultivated terraces, dense forest tracks, and the charming fishing harbour that once captivated Winston Churchill.
Departing through the terraced fields of Ribeira da Alforra, you pass rows of banana plants and vegetable plots that cling to Madeira's steep coastal slopes. The landscape here illustrates how generations of farmers have shaped near-vertical terrain into productive land.
Beyond the coast, the tour climbs off-road through laurel forest to a pair of high mountain viewpoints before descending through grape-growing villages back to the sea. The variety of scenery packed into three and a half hours makes this one of the most efficient ways to read Madeira's geography.
Tour Highlights
Walk on the glass-floor skywalk at Cabo Girão, perched 580 metres above the Atlantic Ocean.
Travel off the beaten track through native Madeiran forest on unpaved 4WD routes.

Finish at the colourful fishing harbour of Camara de Lobos, a location that inspired Winston Churchill's paintings.
Itinerary
The tour begins among the cultivated fields of Ribeira da Alforra, where banana plants, vegetables, and fruit trees grow on terraced land above the coast. This opening stretch provides context for the island's traditional farming methods before the road climbs toward the cliff.
Cabo Girão is among the highest sea cliffs in Europe, dropping nearly vertically for over 500 metres to the Atlantic below. A glass-floor skywalk extends out over the cliff edge, offering a direct view straight down to the ocean and along the coastline in both directions.
Located in Jardim da Serra at approximately 1000 metres above sea level, Boca da Corrida delivers an expansive view over the valley of Curral das Freiras, the ridge of Eira do Serrado, and the peaks of the central massif. It is also the trailhead for the Caminho Real da Encumeada walking route.
A short distance further into the mountains, Boca dos Namorados provides a top-down perspective on the secluded village of Curral das Freiras nestled in its deep volcanic caldera. The contrast between the surrounding cliffs and the village below is striking from this vantage point.
Descending from the mountains, the route passes through Estreito de Camara de Lobos, where grape cultivation for Madeira wine dominates the landscape. Traditional levadas thread through the parish, carrying water by gravity from the highlands to the lower agricultural zones.
The tour concludes at Camara de Lobos, a working fishing village whose bay is lined with small, brightly painted boats. The village is well documented as the site where Winston Churchill set up his easel during visits to Madeira, and his paintings of the harbour can be seen today at his former home in Kent, England.
