Itinerary Overview
The tour begins at the central square before moving to Quai Cyrano, a newly developed riverside complex hosting the Tourist Office and the Maison du Vin. This starting section sets the tone with an introduction to Bergerac's wine culture and riverside character.
Place de la Myrpe, shaded by chestnut trees, features a statue of Cyrano and the kind of half-timbered, flower-lined facade that defines the old town. From here the route reaches the Dordogne, where you learn why this river gave its name to the entire department.
The former gabarrier port tells the story of flat-bottomed river boats that once served the Loire, Charente, Dordogne, and Garonne waterways. The bridge stop offers a panoramic view of the paved quays of the ancient port on one side and the wilder Dordogne banks on the other.
Crossing to the right bank, the route passes the neoclassical Madeleine Church, built in 1843, before arriving at the House of Henri IV, which today houses the entrance to the Tobacco Museum. The name has no direct connection to the French king, a detail explored in the audio commentary.
