The starting point occupies the former site of Klong Prem Prison, established in 1890 on the royal initiative of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and renamed Bangkok Remand Prison in 1972. Built between 1869 and 1870 under the order of King Rama V as the symbolic temple of his reign, Wat Ratchabophit was designed and supervised by Prince Praditworakan on a 10 rai plot. The temple is noted for its intricate decorative work and its distinctive circular gallery surrounding the central chedi.
Commissioned to mark the 1932 Siamese coup that established constitutional monarchy, Democracy Monument stands on Thanon Ratchadamnoen and was erected in 1939. Nearby, you learn about the October 1973 student protests at Thammasat University, a watershed moment in Thai political history.
Commissioned by King Rama I to house a 13th-century bronze Buddha sculpture brought from Sukhothai, Wat Suthat was completed during the reign of King Rama III. The interior walls of the main prayer hall are covered in detailed frescoes illustrating 24 previous incarnations of the Buddha.
Mahakan Fort, the easternmost fortification of Rattanakosin's historic walls, features an octagonal tower measuring 38 metres in diameter and 19 metres in height. Nearby, the Saphan Ronghai (Crying Bridge) was built following the passing of King Chulalongkorn in 1910, funded by civil servants from the Ministry of the Interior in his memory.
