Best of Sri Lanka 7 Days Private Tour
From ancient citadels and misty tea hills to leopard-rich wilderness and colonial coastal forts
This Sri Lanka private tour covers the island's most celebrated historic, cultural and natural landmarks across seven carefully paced days, beginning and ending in Colombo. Guests travel at their own rhythm with a dedicated vehicle and guide throughout. The route connects ancient royal capitals, cool highland retreats, a UNESCO-listed colonial fort and one of the world's most wildlife-dense national parks.
The itinerary moves inland from Colombo on day one, ascending through terraced tea country toward Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lankan kings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there the road climbs further into the central highlands to Nuwara Eliya, where colonial-era bungalows and rolling tea estates define a landscape unlike any other on the island.
The southern arc of the journey passes through Yala National Park, renowned for its exceptionally high density of leopards, before reaching the atmospheric Dutch fort city of Galle on the southwestern coast. The final leg traces the coast northward through Hikkaduwa and Bentota before a city tour of Colombo rounds out the experience ahead of departure.
Tour Highlights
Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a concentrated blend of sacred Buddhist temples, lake-front markets and living cultural traditions.
Nuwara Eliya sits at elevation amid sweeping tea plantations, colonial golf courses and misty valley roads that evoke a very different side of tropical Sri Lanka.
Yala National Park hosts the highest density of leopards in the world alongside elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer and an extensive range of birdlife across 1,259 square kilometres.
Galle Fort, a Dutch colonial landmark preserved for over three and a half centuries, weaves European ramparts and bastions into an active community of offices, churches and artisan shops.
A visit to a working Ceylon Tea factory in the hill country reveals the full journey of Sri Lanka's most iconic export, from freshly plucked leaf to a finished cup of pure single-origin tea.
The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya span 147 acres of landscaped grounds featuring an orchid house, a giant Javan fig tree and meticulously maintained lawns outside Kandy.
A guided Colombo city tour covers the historic port district of Pettah, Cinnamon Gardens, Viharamahadevi Park and the Gangarama Temple, presenting the capital's layered urban identity.
Itinerary Overview
A ToursXplorer representative meets guests at Colombo International Airport and transfers them directly to Kandy. Dinner is included at the hotel upon arrival, and the evening allows time to settle into the hill city.
The day begins with a walk through the 147-acre Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya before moving to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy market and the lakeside city centre. The evening closes with a traditional Kandyan cultural performance featuring drumming and classical dance.
Guests tour a working Ceylon Tea factory in the hill country, observing the full production process from withering to rolling and drying. The route to Nuwara Eliya winds through green valleys dotted with waterfalls and tea pluckers in brightly coloured saris.
After breakfast, the tour descends to the lowlands and enters Yala National Park for a jeep safari through grasslands, shrub jungle and coastal lagoons in search of leopards, elephants and sloth bears. Guests continue to Tissamaharama for the overnight stay.
A morning transfer leads to the walled city of Galle, where guests walk the original Dutch ramparts, explore the Old Gate bearing the British coat of arms and browse the restored Dutch Hospital Shopping Complex. The group then continues to the beach resort area of Hikkaduwa, Bentota or Ahungalla for the night.
The coastal drive north leads to Colombo, where the city tour takes in the commercial port of Pettah, the colonial-era Cinnamon Gardens district, Galle Face Green and the Gangarama Temple. Guests spend the final night in Colombo ahead of departure the following morning.
