Sri Lanka Highlights: Colombo, Kandy, Yala and Galle in Six Days
An inland loop through ancient temples, misty tea hills, and wild national parks on one remarkable island.
This Sri Lanka highlights tour traces an inland loop from Colombo through the cultural triangle, the hill country, and the southern coast, returning to the capital after six immersive days. The route is graded easy, making it accessible to a wide range of travellers seeking variety without physical strain.
Each stop on the itinerary has been chosen to represent a different facet of the island: urban heritage in Colombo, royal and religious legacy in Kandy, colonial botanical splendour at Peradeniya, mist-covered tea estates around Nuwara Eliya, dramatic valley scenery at Ella, wildlife encounters in Yala, and Dutch colonial architecture in Galle.
Accommodation is arranged at each overnight destination, and transport between sites is provided throughout, so the focus remains on experience rather than logistics. The pace is measured, with time built in for spontaneous exploration at each location.
Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary range of landscapes, histories, and cultures into a relatively compact area, and this itinerary reflects that density without feeling rushed.
Tour Highlights
Stand before the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, one of Buddhism's most venerated shrines, surrounded by its historic palaces and manicured gardens.
Walk through the 147-acre Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, home to an orchid house, a giant Javan fig tree, and some of the finest landscaped grounds in South Asia.
Tour a working tea plantation and factory in the hill country, tracing Ceylon tea from freshly picked leaves through production to a tasting of the finished brew.
Join a morning jeep safari in Yala National Park, home to the world's highest density of leopards alongside elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, and abundant birdlife.
Photograph the Nine Arches Bridge near Ella, a striking colonial-era viaduct framed by dense tea plantations and one of the most recognisable images in Sri Lanka.
Explore the ramparts and cobbled lanes of Galle Fort, a Dutch colonial citadel that has preserved over three centuries of layered heritage on the island's southern coast.
Visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and watch a herd of around 60 rescued elephants bathe in the nearby river, an experience frequently cited as a travel highlight by visitors to Sri Lanka.
