3-Day Sailboat Journey Through the Calanques of Marseille
Wind, water, and the wild limestone coves of the French Mediterranean coast
A sailing trip through the Calanques offers one of the most immersive ways to experience the rugged Mediterranean coastline stretching between Marseille and La Ciotat. Over three days aboard a sailboat, guests trade city streets for open sea, navigating between secluded coves, crystalline inlets, and protected marine landscapes that are largely inaccessible by land.
Departing from the heart of Marseille, the journey unfolds at a relaxed pace suited to those seeking genuine connection with the sea. Each day brings a new anchorage, whether the storied cliffs of Morgiou, the turquoise waters of En Vau, or the sheltered bays near Cassis and La Ciotat.
Activities along the route include snorkeling in clear Mediterranean waters, kayaking near coastal rock formations, and short hikes to viewpoints above the coves. The itinerary balances movement with stillness, allowing time to swim, observe the landscape, and simply exist at sea.
This experience is rated easy, making it accessible to travelers without prior sailing experience. The focus is on the natural environment and shared time aboard, not technical sailing instruction.
Tour Highlights
Sail directly from the Old Port of Marseille into the protected Calanques National Park, one of France's most striking coastal reserves.
Anchor overnight in the Calanque de Morgiou, a remote inlet accessible primarily by sea, away from day-trip crowds.
Snorkel in the clear waters of En Vau and Port-Pin, two of the most visually striking calanques along the route.
Explore the Archipelago of Riou on the final day, a protected marine reserve offering exceptional underwater visibility.
Kayak along limestone cliff faces and into shallow coves at stops between Cassis and La Ciotat.
Two nights spent aboard the sailboat in natural anchorages, with the option to go ashore for walks and meals.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
The journey begins at the Old Port with a morning departure toward the rocky promontory of Les Goudes. After lunch at a local restaurant on site, the sailboat continues to the Calanque de Morgiou for the first overnight anchorage. Snorkeling and coastal walking are available in the afternoon.
The second day heads east toward the celebrated Calanque d'En Vau and the adjacent coves of Port-Pin, two of the most photographed inlets on the coast. The route continues to Cassis and La Ciotat, where the boat anchors for the second night. Kayaking, diving, and hiking opportunities are available throughout the day.
The final day traces the return route westward, with a detour through the islands of the Archipelago of Riou, a protected marine zone. Snorkeling and short hikes are possible before the sailboat returns to the Old Port of Marseille.
