More to know about Albufeira

Albufeira, Portugal

The municipality of Albufeira extends across about 140 square kilometres and comprises four parishes. The 2021 Census counted about 44,000 residents. Its coastline stretches for approximately 30 km.

The Romans called the settlement that became Albufeira Baltum. Its present name derives from the Arabic Al-buhera, often translated as 'castle on the sea'. During the Reconquista, Afonso III's forces took Albufeira in 1249 (possibly 1250), and he granted it to the Order of Aviz in 1250. Albufeira received its municipal charter, or foral, from King Manuel I on 20 August 1504.

Things to do in Albufeira

The archaeology museum in Albufeira contains a Neolithic vase alongside architectural remains and objects from the Roman Villa of Retorta. The Clock Tower is regarded as a symbol of Albufeira; an iron crown supporting its hour bell was added in the 19th century.

Consecrated on 15 July 1800, the present Igreja Matriz has a Neoclassical design, with one nave and four lateral chapels. The 18th-century Igreja de Sant'Ana contains a carved wooden figure of Christ on the cross. The Capela da Misericórdia stands on the site of a former mosque; the Santa Casa da Misericórdia was founded in 1499.

The Ermida de São Sebastião may date from the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th century; the 1755 earthquake severely damaged it. The original chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Orada dates from the 16th century. Built during the reign of D. João III, the Torre da Medronheira was used to alert coastal villages to approaching corsairs.

Paderne and its castle

Paderne has a history spanning more than seven centuries and stands where the Ribeira do Algibre and Ribeira de Quarteira meet. Its philharmonic band was established on 1 May 1859. In 1248, D. Paio Peres Correia captured Paderne Castle from the Moors within the municipality of Albufeira. The castle gained Property of Public Interest status in 1971. Construction of Paderne Castle took place in the latter half of the 12th century and the opening decades of the 13th century, while abandonment began in the 16th century. The 1755 earthquake damaged the walls and keep of Paderne Castle.

Southwest of the castle, the medieval Ponte do Castelo crosses the Ribeira de Quarteira on three arches; an inscription on the central arch bears the date 1771.

The Algarve sunset jeep tour with wine and ancient villages lasts 4 hours and includes a professional driver and guide, plus sparkling wine at the sunset viewpoint.

Albufeira beaches

Praia dos Pescadores owes its name to the artisanal fishing boats that formerly gathered there. At Praia do Evaristo, golden sand and a predominantly rocky setting lie between low cliffs. The municipality lists Blue Flag beaches and one marina, as well as Gold Quality beaches and accessible beaches.

The guided Algarve boat tour with caves and dolphin watching runs for 2 hours and 30 minutes, with a coastal cruise, a professional local guide, safety vests and life jackets, an onboard safety briefing, marine biologist commentary and a visit to the Benagil caves included.
