Chlemoutsi Castle and Glarentza
Chlemoutsi Castle, built by the Franks in the 13th century, stands on top of Chelonatas hill, looking out over the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos and Kefalonia. It was founded in 1220-1223 by Geoffrey II of Villehardouin at about 250 m (820 ft) on the highest point of Chelonatas; the Franks called it Clermont, which became Chlemoutsi in Greek, and today it keeps a strong Frankish character.
In 1204 the Franks rebuilt the ancient port and founded a new town, Glarentza, which became an important port of the Eastern Mediterranean.
