Yuzhong District: rivers, Hongyadong and city tours

At the centre of Chongqing municipality lies Yuzhong District. The district forms a peninsula between the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, with water bordering three of its sides. Its area amounts to 23 square kilometres.

Chongqing tours

A private Chongqing city tour with a full day of customised sightseeing lasts 9 hours. It includes a private vehicle and driver throughout, a professional guide who speaks English and an itinerary tailored to your interests, with no compulsory shopping stops.

The guided Chongqing night tour with dinner and Yangtze views lasts 5 hours. Included are a professional local guide throughout, guidance on using the metro, light rail or taxis, and entry to key viewpoints and riverside areas.

Hongyadong

Hongyadong occupies a hillside on the south bank of the Jialing River. Its buildings stand on stilts and rise through 11 storeys, with a total area of 46,000 square metres. The complex is set into the riverside cliffs and reflects the stilt house architecture of the Bayu region.

A platform on the top floor looks out over the Jialing River, while the fourth floor houses a food market. Hongyadong takes its name from Hongya Gate, one of the old city gates of Chongqing. The rebuilt complex opened in 2006.

Yuzhong, Jiefangbei and Chaotianmen

Yuzhong serves as the centre of Chongqing's economy. Jiefangbei, its central business district, occupies the middle of Yuzhong and sits directly uphill from Chaotianmen Port. It contains a large square for pedestrians. Construction of Jiefangbei Shopping Square finished in 1997. Chongqing's Liberation Monument previously bore the name Monument to the Victory of the War of Resistance (against Japan).

At Chaotianmen, a large public square marks the meeting of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Chaotianmen Gate stands at this river junction on the southeastern tip of the Chongqing peninsula. The area near Chaotianmen is the endpoint for many river cruise ships.

Museums and Eling Park

Yuzhong is home to the Three Gorges Museum. In 2005, it opened as the replacement for the former Chongqing Museum. The museum has a floor area of about 42,500 square metres. A panorama spanning 180 degrees depicts wartime Chongqing during its period as the provisional capital of Free China. Huguang Huiguan also functions as a museum today. Eling Park contains the Liangjiang Pavilion, a tower with views across the city.

Rail transport and terrain

Mountainous terrain means that Yuzhong's streets and attractions frequently occupy different levels. Several Chongqing Rail Transit lines serve the district. From the airport, Rail Transit Line 3 reaches Lianglukou or Niujiaotuo station in Yuzhong. Liziba station began operating in Yuzhong in 2005. Monorail trains pass through the centre of a building at the station. Chongqing Rail Transit's Line 2 uses monorail trains across 31.4 kilometres and 25 stations.

Climate

Monsoon influences shape Chongqing's humid subtropical climate. Chongqing is known as the fog city.
