This tour departs from Sorrento, a clifftop city on the southern rim of the Gulf of Naples in the Campania region of southern Italy, and visits two of the Gulf's three main islands. Ischia, located at the northwestern corner of the Gulf, is the largest island in the group and sits approximately 30 kilometers from Naples. It is part of the Phlegraean Archipelago and is of volcanic origin, explaining both its thermal springs and its dramatic interior landscape. Procida, the smallest and least developed of the three main Neapolitan islands, lies between Ischia and the mainland and covers just under four square kilometers. It was designated Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022. The route from Sorrento to both islands crosses open Gulf waters and passes close to the Phlegraean Fields, a large volcanic area that includes the submerged caldera of Capo Miseno and the islet of Nisida. The broader setting — the Bay of Naples, framed by Vesuvius to the east and the Phlegraean coast to the west — is one of the most geographically and historically significant marine landscapes in the Mediterranean.
