Tomar is a historic city in the Ribatejo region of central Portugal, located approximately 140 kilometers north of Lisbon. It is internationally recognized as the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal and the subsequent Order of Christ. The city's medieval core contains an exceptional concentration of Templar, Manueline, Renaissance, and Romanesque heritage, including the UNESCO-listed Convent of Christ. The Nabao River runs through the city center, and the Mouchao Park island is home to the historic waterwheel. Tomar also preserves Portugal's oldest surviving medieval synagogue, reflecting the multicultural layers of Sephardic Jewish, Muslim, and Christian history that define the region.
