Húsavík: Small-Family Run, Responsible Whale Watching
A personal, sustainable encounter with Iceland's most magnificent marine wildlife
Whale watching in Húsavík is widely regarded as one of the premier wildlife experiences in all of Europe, and this intimate, family-run tour brings you closer to that reputation with genuine care and local expertise. Departing from the whale watching capital of Europe, each voyage is guided by a small team that prioritises both passenger safety and the well-being of the whales.
The waters off Húsavík are home to a remarkable diversity of cetaceans, including Humpback, Minke, Blue, Sei, Fin, Sperm, and Killer whales, as well as Northern Bottlenose whales, Pilot Whales, and White-beaked dolphins. Your guide will share accurate, research-backed information about these animals and the marine ecosystem that supports them throughout the journey.
Friends of Moby Dick operates under the responsible whale watching Code of Conduct, maintaining respectful distances and calm, predictable behaviour around wildlife at all times. The approach is as much educational as it is experiential, demonstrating that sustainable tourism and extraordinary wildlife encounters are not mutually exclusive.
Two distinct vessels serve the tour programme depending on the season and your preference. Vinur is a stable, ferry-style boat with a heated indoor area, large windows, and multiple outdoor viewing platforms, well suited to colder months and families with young children. Moby Dick is a beautifully restored traditional Icelandic oak boat offering wide open decks and exceptional conditions for photography with fully unobstructed views.

How the Tour Unfolds
Guests are welcomed at the Friends of Moby Dick ticket office at Hafnarstétt 35 and fitted with warm overalls provided by the crew. A pre-departure safety and wildlife briefing sets expectations for the voyage ahead.
The chosen vessel heads out into Skjálfandi Bay, one of the most productive whale feeding grounds in Icelandic waters. The guide begins pointing out key features of the landscape and explains the marine conditions that attract cetaceans to the area.
The crew navigates responsibly toward whale and dolphin sightings, maintaining distances that comply with Code of Conduct guidelines. Guests are encouraged to observe from the viewing platforms while the guide provides species-specific information and behavioural context.
After approximately two and a half to three hours at sea, the vessel returns to Húsavík harbour. The crew is available for questions and further conversation about the marine ecosystem and local conservation efforts.
