Speedboat Island Hopping Tour in Ria Formosa
A four-hour journey through barrier islands, fishing villages, and pristine lagoon waters departing from Olhão.
This Ria Formosa island hopping speedboat tour takes you across the sheltered lagoon waters of one of Portugal's most significant natural parks, visiting barrier islands that few visitors ever reach on foot. The skipper serves as your on-board guide, sharing knowledge of the area's ecology, history, and traditional fishing culture throughout the journey.
The route connects a series of distinct island communities, each shaped by generations of fishermen and seasonal visitors. From the historic lighthouse at Farol to the living fishing village of Culatra, the tour reveals the human geography of a protected landscape that exists largely off the standard tourist circuit.
Binoculars and illustrated guide books are provided on board, allowing passengers to observe the rich birdlife and coastal flora of the Ria Formosa at close range. The natural park supports a remarkable diversity of migratory and resident species, making it a rewarding destination for travellers with an interest in wildlife as well as those drawn purely by the beaches.
A stop in Culatra village provides time to explore its sandy streets, visit a local restaurant for fresh fish, or simply walk to the ocean-facing beach. This is an authentic community with its own school, church, and football club, offering a genuine glimpse into island life in the Algarve.

Pass close to Deserta Island, an almost uninhabited barrier island featuring a wooden lagoon walkway and a concession beach facing open sea.
Return to Olhão passing the historic tuna canning factories and the working fishing harbour, a reminder of the city's enduring maritime identity.
Tour Itinerary
The tour departs from the pier in front of the Real Marina and Spa Hotel in Olhão. The speedboat heads out through the canals of the Ria Formosa toward the barrier island chain, with the skipper providing commentary on the lagoon ecosystem.
The first pass takes in Farol Island, where the historic Santa Maria Lighthouse stands at the western tip. The tour also skirts Deserta Island, an almost uninhabited stretch of dune and beach with minimal human infrastructure.
A stop of approximately one hour and thirty minutes is made at Culatra, a functioning fishing village with around 1,000 permanent residents. Passengers can have lunch at one of the local restaurants, walk the sandy streets, or head to the beach during this break.
The route continues to Armona Bay and the western end of Armona Island, where the speedboat makes a thirty-minute stop. The island's broad dune system and calm lagoon-side shore make it a pleasant interlude before the return leg.
The final section of the tour passes close to the historic tuna canning factories and the active fishing harbour before docking back at the departure pier in Olhão.
