Solimoes River Piranha Fishing and Alligator Watching Tour
A hands-on encounter with the wild heart of the Amazon basin
This Solimoes River piranha fishing and alligator watching tour offers a direct and authentic introduction to the Amazon's most iconic wildlife from the water. Departing from Manaus, this 4.5-hour journey combines active fishing with guided nighttime alligator spotting led by an experienced naturalist guide.
The Solimoes River, known for its warmer and more biologically productive waters compared to the Rio Negro, provides an outstanding setting for piranha fishing. Guests will fish from the river using traditional methods, gaining a genuine sense of the techniques local fishermen have used for generations.
As daylight fades, the tour transitions into alligator territory. The naturalist guide searches the riverbank vegetation and attempts to catch an alligator by hand, allowing guests to observe the animal closely before it is safely returned to its habitat.
Between activities, the route passes through igarapes and igapos, the narrow channels and seasonally flooded forests that define the Amazonian landscape. Depending on the season, access to these flooded areas may be available, along with a visit to a local artisan craft center.

Tour Itinerary
The tour begins at the river terminal in Manaus. Guests board a river vessel for the crossing toward Iranduba, taking in views of the waterway and its surrounding landscape.
Upon reaching the Iranduba coast, the group passes by palafita stilt homes and observes the daily lives of ribeirinho fishing communities. The naturalist guide provides context on the ecology and culture of the area.
The guide identifies a productive fishing spot along the Solimoes River. Guests use traditional fishing lines to attempt to catch piranhas in waters notably richer in fish than the Rio Negro.
The boat moves through narrow channels and, depending on the season, enters flooded forest areas. A visit to a local artisan craft center may take place during this segment.
As darkness falls, the guide scans the riverbanks using a flashlight to locate alligators. When one is found, the guide attempts to catch it bare-handed, allowing the group to photograph and observe it before releasing it back into its habitat.
After the alligator encounter, the group boards the vessel for the return journey to the Manaus river terminal, concluding the tour.
