Goðafoss Waterfall and Akureyri Botanical Gardens Shore Excursion
A journey through ancient legend and living greenery in the heart of North Iceland
This shore excursion combines two of North Iceland's most compelling destinations into a single, well-paced half-day outing. From the thundering cascade of Goðafoss Waterfall to the serene pathways of Akureyri's celebrated Botanical Garden, the tour offers a balanced blend of natural drama and quiet contemplation.
Departing directly from the cruise port, the journey takes guests eastward along the Icelandic Ring Road toward the Skjálfandafljót River, where Goðafoss has carved its place into both the landscape and the national story. The falls drop 12 meters over a breadth of 30 meters, producing a constant mist and a roar that commands attention from the moment you arrive.
The return route passes through Akureyri's Old Town, giving travelers a brief but meaningful look at the town's compact historic core, with its painted timber houses and church-crowned hillside. The excursion concludes at the Botanical Garden, where carefully tended pathways wind past more than 7,000 plant species, including 430 native Icelandic varieties that have adapted to the subarctic growing season.
The tour is rated easy, making it accessible to a wide range of fitness levels. No strenuous hiking is required, and the pacing allows sufficient time at each location without feeling rushed.

Itinerary
The tour begins at the cruise pier in Akureyri. Guests board the vehicle and head east along Iceland's Route 1 toward the Skjálfandafljót River valley.
Arriving at Goðafoss, guests have time to walk to the viewing platforms on both banks of the river. The guide provides context about the waterfall's role in Iceland's conversion to Christianity in the year 1000, when chieftain Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw his pagan idols into the falls.
On the return to Akureyri, the route passes through the town's historic center. Guests observe the characteristic painted houses, the stepped streets leading to Akureyrarkirkja church, and the compact harbor district.
The final stop is the Lystigarður Akureyrar, the town's botanical garden. Guests are free to walk the paths at their own pace, taking in the diverse plant collections and the peaceful atmosphere of this green space set against the surrounding fjord landscape.
The tour concludes with a short transfer back to the Akureyri pier, arriving well within the 3.5-hour window to allow guests to reboard their vessel comfortably.
