Route Overview
Your adventure begins at Sweden's national theatre for opera and ballet, operating in that role since 1773. The building carries the ambitions of King Gustav III, who replaced a French troupe with a Swedish ensemble and eventually moved them into this purpose-built Opera House in 1782.
The route passes through the civic heart of Gamla Stan, touching on Sweden's parliamentary history that traces back to the 1435 meeting in Arboga. The Four Estates system — nobility, clergy, burghers, and peasants — shaped this city's political landscape for centuries.
The Royal Palace, completed in the 18th century, is considered one of Europe's defining examples of Baroque architecture. Nearby, the Royal Armoury preserves artefacts dating to the 16th century, including the battle-worn garments of King Gustavus Adolphus saved from the 1620s.
Storkyrkan, first mentioned in 1279, is the oldest church in Gamla Stan and is traditionally linked to Birger Jarl, the city's founder. Close by stands the celebrated sculpture of Saint George and the Dragon, commissioned after the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471 and attributed to the workshop of Bernt Notke.
Opened in 1722, Den Gyldene Freden is one of Stockholm's oldest restaurants, still operating from its original location and long associated with the Royal Academy. Järntorget, the city's second-oldest square dating to around 1300, once served as the most active trade hub in medieval Stockholm.
The German Church, officially Sankta Gertrud, sits at the centre of a neighbourhood that was dominated by German merchants during the Middle Ages and is dedicated to Saint Gertrude, patron saint of travellers. The quest concludes at Stortorget, where the Nobel Museum occupies a rococo palace built between 1773 and 1776 — the oldest and most storied square in Stockholm.
