Wildlife Encounter at Sea
Sagres Dolphin Watching Boat Trip – See Wild Cetaceans
A three-hour guided voyage into the Atlantic, led by a marine biologist, in search of wild dolphins and whales.
This Sagres dolphin watching boat trip takes you beyond the coastline into open Atlantic waters where resident and migratory cetaceans roam freely, observed and explained by a professional marine biologist on board throughout the journey.
Sagres sits at the southwestern tip of Portugal, where the Atlantic Ocean creates conditions that attract a remarkable variety of marine life. The deeper offshore waters along this stretch of the Algarve coast serve as feeding and migration corridors for multiple dolphin and whale species throughout the year.
A qualified marine biologist accompanies every departure, offering real-time identification of species, context about their social behaviours, and insight into the conservation challenges they face. This is not a passive sightseeing ride — it is an active, educational encounter with ocean wildlife in its natural environment.
The fleet is selected based on sea conditions and group size, ranging from agile semi-rigid inflatables to stable catamarans, ensuring both comfort and the best positioning to observe animals without disturbance.

What to Expect
Before boarding, the marine biologist leads a pre-departure briefing covering safety procedures, the species you may encounter, and guidelines for respectful wildlife observation.
The vessel departs from Sagres Harbour and heads into the Atlantic, moving toward offshore zones known for cetacean activity. The crew monitors conditions and adjusts the route in real time.
The biologist scans the water surface for signs of dolphin pods or whale spouts. Common species in the area include common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and, seasonally, fin whales and sperm whales.
When animals are located, the vessel positions itself responsibly nearby. The biologist narrates behaviours, explains social structures, and answers questions from passengers in real time.
After approximately three hours at sea, the boat returns to Sagres Harbour. The biologist remains available for follow-up questions during the return journey.
