Ancient Aptera, Kourna Lake and the Springs of Argyroupoli — A Private Day Journey Through Western Crete
Trace ancient city-states, natural lakeshores, and centuries-old watermills in a single unhurried day.
This private countryside tour of western Crete connects four distinct destinations — the archaeological site of Aptera, the olive oil village of Vrisses, the coastal settlement of Georgioupoli, and the spring-fed village of Argyroupoli — into a coherent half-day experience. The pace is easy and the route moves from elevated ruins down to the coast, then inland to freshwater landscapes. Each stop offers something visually and historically separate from the last.
Aptera is one of the most significant City-States of ancient Crete, with occupation layers spanning the Minoan through Byzantine periods. The site sits on a plateau commanding panoramic views toward the White Mountains and the Bay of Souda, giving visitors a rare combination of historical depth and natural scenery in one location.
Beyond the ruins, the tour passes through a working olive oil factory in Vrisses and reaches Kourna Lake — the only natural freshwater lake on Crete — before finishing at the spring-fed terraces of Argyroupoli, where medieval watermills have been converted into riverside taverns serving traditional Cretan food.
Tour Highlights
Walk the ancient walls of Aptera, stretching 3,480 metres and dating to the 4th century BC, alongside Roman cisterns and Byzantine buildings.
Visit the only natural freshwater lake in Crete at Kourna, where small rowing boats offer a close look at the surrounding flora and fauna.
Explore Georgioupoli, a coastal village framed by eucalyptus groves and the scenic estuary of the Almyros river.
Tour an active olive oil factory in Vrisses and learn about traditional Cretan olive oil production firsthand.
See the natural springs of Argyroupoli emerge from the cave of Agia Dynami and flow past restored watermills into the Mouselas riverbed.
Discover Venetian mansions, carved Greco-Roman tombs, and Byzantine frescoed churches within the living village of Argyroupoli.
Enjoy unobstructed views of the Lefka Ori — the White Mountains of Crete — from the elevated plateau of Aptera.
Itinerary
The tour begins at Aptera, a City-State continuously inhabited from the Minoan period through the Byzantine era. Visitors can examine the ancient city walls, a Roman theatre, a peristyle villa, monumental underground cisterns, and the remains of public baths, all set against views across the Bay of Souda toward the Lefka Ori.
The route descends to Vrisses, a spring-fed green village that is also home to what is considered the oldest bridge in Crete. A working olive oil factory here provides a direct look at the process behind one of the island's most important agricultural products.
Georgioupoli sits where the Almyros river meets the sea, its small harbour sheltering local fishing boats beneath eucalyptus-lined streets. The riverside setting is a natural stopping point for a coffee before continuing inland to Kourna Lake.
Kourna is the only natural freshwater lake on Crete and sits in a bowl of low hills with clear water and abundant birdlife. Rowing boats are available for a short excursion on the water, and lakeside taverns serve fresh fish dishes.
The final stop, built over ancient Lappa, preserves Roman street mosaics, Byzantine frescoed churches, carved necropolis tombs, and Venetian mansions still in residential use. Below the village, the springs of Argyroupoli flow from a cave through old watermills that now operate as traditional taverns beside the river.
