Eastern Serbia Monasteries and Resava Cave Tour
A full-day journey through medieval fortresses, sacred monasteries, and ancient underground worlds in Eastern Serbia
The Eastern Serbia Monasteries and Resava Cave Tour offers a rare opportunity to experience the cultural, spiritual, and natural heritage of one of Serbia's most historically significant regions in a single day. Departing directly from your Belgrade accommodation, you travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with a professional guide through landscapes that shaped the last chapter of the Serbian medieval kingdom.
The Pomoravlje District, your destination for the day, was the heartland of Serbia during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The monasteries of Ravanica and Manasija stand as enduring monuments to rulers who defined the nation's identity, built during a period when the Ottoman advance was reshaping the entire Balkans.
Beyond the monasteries, the tour descends into the Resava Cave, one of the oldest cave systems in Serbia, where formations dating back tens of millions of years reveal a geological story that dwarfs even the most dramatic chapters of human history. A stop at the Veliki Buk waterfall and a traditional Serbian lunch complete an itinerary that balances history, nature, and local culture.
Tour Highlights
Visit Ravanica Monastery, the endowment of Prince Lazar built between 1375 and 1377 and the birthplace of the Morava architectural school.

Pause at Veliki Buk waterfall, a protected natural monument standing 20 to 25 meters high and one of Serbia's tallest waterfalls.
Taste traditional products and cuisine from Eastern Serbia during a lunch stop in an authentic local setting.
Travel with a professional live guide throughout the entire tour in a private, air-conditioned vehicle.
Learn about the Battle of Kosovo, Serbian Orthodox Christianity, and the Resava orthography legacy during expert-guided commentary.
Itinerary
Your guide collects you directly from your accommodation in Belgrade. The journey heads toward the Pomoravlje District, the geographic and historical center of the last Serbian medieval kingdom.
Built between 1375 and 1377 by Prince Lazar, Ravanica is considered the founding monument of the Morava school of architecture, blending Mount Athos trefoil tradition with a cross-in-square five-domed model. Your guide explains the monastery's frescoes, the life of its nuns, and the significance of Prince Lazar as both a national ruler and a saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The Resava Cave system spans three levels connected by artificial tunnels, filled with formations including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, galleries, and flowstone waterfalls, some dating back around 45 million years. After the cave, the tour continues to Veliki Buk, a karstic waterfall protected as a natural monument, followed by a traditional Serbian lunch at a local restaurant nearby.
Raised by Despot Stefan Lazarevic, son of Prince Lazar, between 1406 and 1418, Manasija is surrounded by eleven towers and features frescoes regarded as among the finest examples of medieval Serbian art. The monastery also preserves remains of an old refectory and library, home to a scriptorium that developed the influential Resava orthography.
After visiting Manasija, the group travels back to Belgrade. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel or accommodation in the afternoon.
