Porto Moniz Enchanted Terraces 4x4 Tour
Stone roads, ancient forests, and volcanic pools along Madeira's forgotten northwest edge.
This full-day Porto Moniz 4x4 shore excursion takes you deep into the rugged northwest of Madeira, tracing narrow stone-plastered roads through old-growth laurel forest and dramatic coastal scenery that most visitors never reach. Pickup is available directly at the cruise terminal or free at the CR7 statue and museum, making it seamless for cruise passengers.
The route climbs through Serra de Agua and the high plateau of Paul da Serra before descending through the ancient Fanal forest, a UNESCO-recognised natural reserve cloaked in centuries-old trees. A dedicated 15-minute stop at one of Madeira's historic levadas, water aqueducts first constructed in the 15th century and still in use today, offers a quiet moment to understand the island's relationship with water and agriculture.
The tour continues along the north coast, passing through the villages of Ribeira da Janela and Seixal, before arriving at Porto Moniz. When conditions permit, guests can swim in the famous volcanic lava pools at Porto Moniz or at Seixal, natural seawater formations carved by centuries of Atlantic surf.

Itinerary
The tour departs from the CR7 statue or the cruise terminal and heads inland through the scenic valley of Serra de Agua, following the course of the Ribeira Brava river into the heart of Madeira.
The route ascends to the Paul da Serra plateau, a sweeping highland expanse offering wide open views. From here, the 4x4 descends into the Fanal forest, a misty old-growth woodland within Madeira's UNESCO-protected Laurisilva reserve.
A 15-minute stop at a local levada gives guests a close look at Madeira's remarkable irrigation network, still functioning as it has for over five centuries. The tour then passes through the village of Ginjas and into São Vicente on the north coast.
Travelling west along the coast, the group stops at Ribeira da Janela, named for its distinctive rock arch rising from the sea. The dramatic cliffs and Atlantic views along this stretch are among the most striking on the island.
The tour arrives at Porto Moniz, the northwestern tip of Madeira, where guests have free time to explore the village. When weather allows, guests can swim in the renowned natural volcanic lava pools fed by Atlantic seawater.
The return journey passes through Seixal, a small coastal village with its own lava pool access point and a striking waterfall dropping directly onto the roadside. The group then heads back to Funchal and the cruise terminal.
