Farm Visit, Olive Grove Tour and Oil Tasting at Azienda Agricola Garra
Four generations of olive cultivation on a hilltop overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
This olive oil farm experience in Abruzzo takes you into the heart of a family estate that has cultivated olives for over a century, combining a guided walk through nearly 2,000 olive trees with a hands-on tasting session and a visit to the working oil mill. The experience lasts six hours and is rated very easy, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. You leave with a genuine understanding of how premium extra virgin olive oil moves from grove to bottle.
The Garra family story spans four generations, from a bank director who first tended these slopes to a young law graduate who now manages the estate with a focus on quality and sustainability. Each generation has carried forward a shared passion without ever treating the olive groves as a secondary concern. That continuity shows in the careful, integrated farming methods used across more than ten hectares in the Mutignano hamlet above Pineto.
The estate grows five olive varieties — Leccino, Intosso, Ascolana, Picholine and Bella di Spagna — on a gently sloping hillside that faces the Adriatic. The average age of the trees is thirty years, and the farming approach respects natural cycles while maintaining rigorous quality standards. Visitors experience the landscape in the way the Garra family does: at a slow, attentive pace.
The tasting portion of the experience adapts to weather conditions, taking place either in the open grove or in the dedicated tasting room. In either setting, the focus is on learning to identify the characteristics of each oil variety through direct sensory contact rather than abstract description. The session ends with a small gift from the estate.

How the Day Unfolds
Guests arrive at the Garra estate in Mutignano and receive a detailed introduction to the farm's history, the family's four-generation legacy, and the varieties grown on site. The setting and farming philosophy are explained before moving outdoors.
A guided tour leads through the rows of olive trees, covering cultivation techniques, the characteristics of each variety, and the principles of integrated agriculture used across the estate. The walk covers terrain that is level and accessible.
Depending on weather, the tasting takes place directly among the trees or inside the dedicated tasting room. Guests sample oils from different varieties and learn to evaluate colour, aroma and flavour through guided sensory exercises.
The group moves to the on-site oil mill, where the production process is explained in full: from the reception of freshly harvested olives through washing, milling, malaxation and centrifugal separation to the final storage of the oil. The equipment and each stage's role in quality are covered.
The experience concludes with a warm farewell from the Garra family. Each guest receives a small gift prepared by the estate, offering a tangible memory of the visit and the oils discovered during the day.
