Public Nightwatchman Walk in Medieval Lucerne
Step into the shadows of the old town and let the Nightwatchman guide you through centuries of legend, law, and lore.
The Nightwatchman Walk in Lucerne is a 90-minute evening tour through the illuminated alleyways and historic squares of one of Switzerland's best-preserved medieval old towns. Led by guide Ralf in full period attire and carrying a traditional Swiss Halberd, the tour brings together ghost stories, civic history, and authentic medieval atmosphere in a format accessible to all ages and fitness levels.
From the moment the fire horn sounds at Rosengart Platz, guests are transported to a Lucerne that existed centuries before the modern waterfront promenades. The route winds through narrow passages, past Renaissance fountains, and along the Reuss River, revealing layers of the city that daylight tours rarely reach.
Historical images projected via tablet and postcards supplement the storytelling, grounding each legend in documented local history. The tour concludes back at the starting point near Chapel Bridge, the most recognisable landmark in the Swiss interior.

Tour Itinerary
The tour opens with the Nightwatchman's fire horn call at Rathausquai, between Chapel Bridge and St. Peter's Chapel. Guide Ralf introduces himself, outlines life in medieval Lucerne, and displays the Martini Plan to map the evening's route through the old town.
The Water Tower, built several decades before the wooden Chapel Bridge, is explored through storytelling about its original civic functions and the chamber located inside. Guests learn why this structure became the most photographed attraction in Switzerland.
The route continues through the Furrengasse, where a local ghost story and the legend of the Toggelis are recounted. At Kornmarkt, the Renaissance Town Hall comes into view alongside the original medieval measures of length — the Foot and the Elle — and the tale of the Giant of Reiden.
In Brandgässli Alley, the Riot of Lucerne is recounted in full. The Weinmarkt reveals Lucerne's oldest surviving fountain and the stories behind its Renaissance murals, before the group moves to the Zöpfli to examine medieval justice, interrogation, and punishment.
Crossing the Reussbrücke, the walk passes the residence of the so-called Swiss King, a former pawn shop, the old mint house, and the window of a medieval pharmacy. The curious architecture of Lux Ritter's house introduces the tragic story of mason Hans von Trient.
The tour reaches its visual centrepiece at the Dance of Death paintings by Jakob von Wyl, seven works that reflect medieval attitudes toward mortality. The group then passes the Jesuit Church and crosses Chapel Bridge back to Rosengart Platz, where the tour concludes.
