Maramures and Bucovina: Wooden Churches, Painted Monasteries and Living Traditions
Three days through UNESCO villages, iconic cemeteries and the painted monasteries of northeastern Romania
This Maramures and Bucovina tour takes you deep into two of Romania's most culturally significant regions, where centuries-old traditions survive in working villages and UNESCO-listed monuments stand as testament to an enduring way of life. Over three days, you will encounter wooden churches, striking painted monastery facades and the singular folk art of Easter egg decoration.
Maramures is one of the last rural landscapes in Europe where horse-drawn carts share the road with daily life, and where wooden architecture has been refined across generations into a recognized art form. The region's churches, several of which carry UNESCO World Heritage status, reflect both the spiritual depth and the craftsmanship of local communities.
Crossing the Carpathians into Bucovina introduces an entirely different visual language. The exterior frescoes of the Bucovina monasteries, painted in vivid blues, reds and ochres, have survived centuries of weather and remain among the most remarkable examples of Byzantine-influenced art in the world.
The tour returns to Cluj-Napoca after three days, offering a complete arc through northern Romania's heritage landscape — from the Merry Cemetery at Sapanta to the frescoed walls of Voronet or Sucevita.
