Landmannalaugar and the Valley of Tears
Into the rainbow mountains, lava fields, and geothermal wonders of Iceland's remote interior
The Laugahraun lava field, formed in 1477, covers the valley floor in a dense layer of black obsidian — a volcanic glass recognized for its sharp, smooth edges and distinctive appearance. The field gained wider recognition when it was used as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones, representing the material known as Dragon Glass. Walking beside these formations offers a tangible sense of geological time.
The guided hike to Brennisteinsalda, known as the Sulphur Wave, winds through terrain colored by iron and sulfur minerals in shades of ochre, rust, green, and gold. Small hot springs emit steady columns of steam along the route, and the surrounding silence amplifies the sense of remoteness. The hike takes approximately two hours and is rated suitable for most fitness levels.
After returning from the hike, visitors have time to soak in the natural geothermal pool at the base of the mountains. The warm, mineral-rich water provides a restorative contrast to the cooler highland air. A swimsuit and towel are recommended for this portion of the day.

Itinerary
The tour departs from Reykjavik and heads into Iceland's southern interior, crossing landscapes that transition from coastal plains to highland terrain. The journey provides early views of lava fields and volcanic ridges before reaching the first stop.
The first stop is Hjálparfoss, a two-tiered waterfall that drops into a wide plunge pool encircled by basalt rock formations. The area was historically known as a resting point for travelers crossing the barren Sprengisandur route, where lush grass provided relief for horses after long stretches of highland desert.
The centerpiece of the tour, Landmannalaugar offers over three hours for exploration. The guide leads a two-hour hike to Brennisteinsalda through rhyolite mountains and beside steaming hot springs, with the option to return early and relax in the geothermal pool.
At the base of Landmannalaugar, the Laugahraun lava field spreads across the valley in a mass of sharp black obsidian. The guide provides context on the 1477 eruption that formed it and its connection to popular culture through its appearance in Game of Thrones.
The final major stop is Sigöldugljúfur, a narrow canyon fed by dozens of small springs that cascade down colorful, moss-draped cliffs into clear pools below. The site has become widely recognized for its photogenic qualities and offers a quieter, reflective end to the highland day.
The group reboards the vehicle for the return drive to Reykjavik, completing the approximately 11-hour round trip. The route back crosses the same dramatic highland scenery encountered on the way out.
