Hiking Around Navarino Bay: Lagoon, Dunes and Medieval Castle
A four-hour circular walk connecting a protected wetland, a legendary beach and a hilltop fortress above the Ionian Sea
A hike along Navarino Bay offers one of the most ecologically and historically layered walking experiences in the southern Peloponnese, tracing a path from a migratory bird lagoon to a Bronze Age cave and a medieval fortification — all within a single morning.
The route begins at Divari beach near Gialova and follows the edge of the Gialova Lagoon, a designated Natura 2000 wetland and the largest wetland in southern Greece. The lagoon provides critical habitat for herons, flamingos, ospreys and dozens of other species, both endemic and migratory.
From the lagoon the trail crosses a system of coastal dunes and arrives at Voidokoilia, a circular beach with clear turquoise water whose striking omega shape is visible from the hills above. The spot is calm, photogenic and rarely crowded outside peak summer.
The ascent continues to Paleokastro, a medieval fort that crowns the headland, passing the cave traditionally identified with the mythical Mycenaean king Nestor. From the ramparts the panoramic view across Navarino Bay and the island of Sphacteria is among the most dramatic vistas in the region.

Itinerary
The hike begins at Divari beach near Gialova, close to Pylos. The guide briefs the group on the ecological significance of the area and the route ahead before setting off along the lagoon path.
The trail follows the perimeter of the Gialova Lagoon, where migratory and endemic bird species including flamingos, herons and ospreys can be observed. This section moves at a relaxed pace to allow for wildlife observation.
Crossing the dune system, the group arrives at Voidokoilia, the celebrated omega-shaped beach. A brief swim in its turquoise waters is optional before continuing toward the hillside.
On the ascent toward Paleokastro, the route passes the cave associated with the legendary Mycenaean king Nestor. The guide shares the site's mythological and historical context.
At the top of the hill, the group explores the medieval castle ruins and takes in panoramic views across Navarino Bay. A healthy picnic is served here before the descent.
The group descends along the same route back to the starting point at Divari beach. The total walking time is approximately four hours including all stops.
