Marajó Island 3-Day Adventure: Mangroves, Buffaloes and River Life
A slow river journey into the wild heart of the Amazon estuary
This Marajó Island tour takes travelers from the port of Belém into one of the most ecologically rich river delta landscapes on Earth, combining traditional boat travel, wildlife farms, and coastal fishing villages over three immersive days.
Marajó Island, positioned at the mouth of the Amazon River, is larger than Switzerland and remains one of Brazil's least-explored destinations. The island is known for its vast buffalo herds, rare bird species, and a way of life that has changed little over generations.
The journey blends natural observation with cultural encounters, from crab fishing in freshwater mangroves to watching the symbolic Guará scarlet ibis gather at sunset over open fields. Each day moves at a deliberate pace, allowing genuine contact with the landscape rather than a surface-level overview.
Travelers stay at the Hotel Ilha do Marajó in the village of Camara, using it as a base to explore Salvaterra, Joanes, and Soure — three distinct communities that each reveal a different facet of island identity.
Tour Highlights
Navigate the Bay of Marajó by regional riverboat, the same vessels locals use daily along these waterways.
Walk through the Barra Velha mangrove area, where freshwater mixes with tidal influence and crab fishing is practiced by hand.
Visit a traditional Marajoara farm to observe buffalo herds and the Guará ibis, the living symbol of the island.
Tour the Soure Tannery, a working craft leather center where buffalo hide is transformed into regional artisan products.
Explore the historic village of Joanes and its colonial beach, one of the island's most scenic coastal stops.
Discover the fishing village beach near Soure, framed by coconut palms, white sand, and traditional fishing tents.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Early morning transfer from your Belém hotel to the dock station for departure by regional boat toward the village of Camara. After check-in at Hotel Ilha do Marajó, the afternoon is spent visiting the Barra Velha mangrove area, a distinctive ecosystem where locals practice freshwater crab fishing along the margins of the Bay of Marajó.
Following breakfast, the group departs for Salvaterra, the island's second-largest city, stopping at the coastal village of Joanes to observe regional boats and enjoy the beach. In the afternoon, the tour visits a traditional Marajoara farm where buffalo and horses are raised alongside a bird sanctuary — home to the Guará ibis, the emblematic bird of Marajó.
The final morning includes a city tour of Soure, covering the Buffalo Leather Tannery craft center and the fishing village beach with its characteristic coconut palms and white sand. Hotel checkout is followed by the early afternoon transfer back to Camara village for the regional boat return to Belém, arriving in the early evening.
