Canyoning Salto do Cabrito — Half Day with Transport
Rappel through cascading waterfalls in the volcanic heart of Sao Miguel
Canyoning Salto do Cabrito is a technically engaging half-day adventure set inside one of Sao Miguel's most dramatic natural gorges. Participants descend a sequence of volcanic waterfalls using rappel techniques, guided by certified professionals every step of the way.
The canyon reveals a landscape shaped by centuries of volcanic activity, with lush green walls, rushing water, and the ruins of an old hydroelectric station tucked deep inside the ravine. This is not a passive sightseeing walk — it is an active, immersive experience for those who want to engage directly with the island's raw terrain.
Transport is included, making logistics straightforward for visitors staying in the Ribeira Grande area. All technical equipment is provided on arrival, and guides conduct a full safety briefing before entry into the canyon.
Participants must be at least 12 years old and comfortable with physical activity in wet, uneven terrain. The experience lasts approximately three hours and is rated as a more technical canyoning route, combining walking sections with genuine vertical rappelling challenges.

How the Day Unfolds
Participants meet guides at the designated Salto do Cabrito meeting point. Wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, and all necessary technical gear are distributed and fitted on site.
The group follows a trail of approximately 15 minutes to reach the canyon entrance. This walk offers the first views of the gorge and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Guides conduct a thorough safety and technique briefing at the canyon entry point. Rappelling techniques are explained and demonstrated before the descent begins.
The group descends through the canyon, alternating between rappelling the three vertical waterfalls and walking sections along the canyon floor. The tallest waterfall drops 15 metres.
Along the route, participants pass the remains of an old hydroelectric station, a historical feature unique to this canyon that guides will present in context.
After completing the canyon route, the group exits the gorge and returns to the meeting point. Participants change into dry clothes before transport back.
