Private Golden Circle with Geysers & Waterfalls
A full day through Iceland's most celebrated natural and historical landscapes, at your own pace.
The Private Golden Circle Tour brings together Iceland's defining natural landmarks — Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall — in a single eight-hour journey with a dedicated English-speaking driver.
This tour is designed for families and small groups who want direct access to Iceland's most iconic sites without the compromises of a shared coach. Your private driver handles all logistics, allowing your group to set the pace and linger where it matters most.
Beyond the three classic stops, the route along the ring road opens up a range of optional add-ons, from geothermal spas to lava tunnels, making it easy to tailor the day to your group's interests. Those seeking deeper context can upgrade to a driver-guide option.
Tour Highlights
Walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates at Thingvellir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with nearly a thousand years of Icelandic history.
Watch Strokkur, Europe's only active geyser, erupt every four to five minutes, sending jets of boiling water high into the air.
Stand beside Gullfoss, Iceland's most visited waterfall, as glacial water from Langjokull plunges 105 feet in two dramatic steps.
Travel in a comfortable private vehicle with a dedicated English-speaking driver who manages timing and identifies scenic photo stops along the route.
Optional add-ons along the route include the Blue Lagoon, Kerid Crater, Faxi Waterfall, the Lava Tunnel, and several geothermal spas.
Upgrade to a driver-guide for groups of up to fourteen who want historical and geological commentary throughout the journey.
Itinerary
Your private vehicle departs from Reykjavik, heading toward the Golden Circle route with your English-speaking driver. The drive offers early views of Iceland's volcanic landscapes before reaching the first major stop.
The first stop is Thingvellir, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates have been pulling apart for approximately one million years, creating a visible rift valley. The site is also where Iceland's Viking-era parliament, the Althingi, convened at the law rock — a tradition that continued from the year 930 AD through to Iceland's declaration of independence from Denmark in 1944. An information center and souvenir shop are located near the Hakid parking area.
Roughly an hour east of Thingvellir, the Geysir hot spring area features naturally steaming geothermal pools and the active geyser Strokkur, which erupts every four to five minutes. This is one of the few places in Iceland with a reliably erupting geyser, making it a consistent spectacle regardless of time of day or season.
Gullfoss sits on the Hvita glacial river, fed by the Langjokull glacier, and drops 105 feet in two cascading steps into a deep canyon gorge. The waterfall's name — meaning golden falls — is attributed to various local legends, including a story of a Viking who threw his gold into the water rather than let anyone inherit it. On clear days, rainbows appear in the spray above the falls.
During the return leg along the ring road, your driver can accommodate optional stops such as Kerid Crater, Faxi Waterfall, the Lava Tunnel at Raufarhólshellir, Fridheimar greenhouse and horse farm, or the geothermal spas at Fontana or Secret Lagoon. These must be arranged in advance through the operator.
The tour concludes with the return drive to Reykjavik, completing the full eight-hour circuit. Total time may vary slightly depending on any add-ons selected.
