Private Évora Tour: Roman Temple, Cathedral, Chapel of Bones and Giraldo Square
A private journey through two thousand years of history in one of Portugal's most storied UNESCO cities.
This private Évora tour brings together the city's most compelling landmarks in a single, unhurried day designed exclusively for your group of up to eight people. From a remarkably preserved Roman temple to a haunting chapel lined with human bones, Évora offers a depth of history that few Iberian cities can match.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Évora stands at the heart of the Alentejo region, its medieval streetscape essentially unchanged for centuries. A private format means the itinerary adapts to your pace, with no shared coach and no waiting for strangers.
The route covers four distinct landmarks, each representing a different chapter of the city's layered past. Whether you are drawn by Roman archaeology, Baroque architecture, or the quiet drama of the Chapel of Bones, this excursion places all of it within a single well-structured day.

Itinerary
The visit begins at the Temple of Diana, a Roman structure dating to the first century whose granite columns still stand at their original height. It is considered one of the finest examples of Roman religious architecture surviving in Portugal, and free time is provided for photography and independent exploration around its base.
The group moves to the Cathedral of Évora, a Roman Catholic church begun in the twelfth century and positioned at the highest point of the old city. Its mix of Romanesque and Gothic elements, combined with a later Baroque portal, reflects the long arc of the city's ecclesiastical history.
Time is set aside to enjoy Giraldo Square, the animated heart of Évora's historic center, framed by sixteenth-century arcades and anchored by the Renaissance fountain of the same name. The square is an ideal place to absorb the rhythm of local life before continuing to the tour's final stop.
The excursion concludes at the Chapel of Bones, built in the seventeenth century by three Franciscan friars using the bones and skulls of approximately five thousand monks. The entrance inscription — "We bones that are here, for your waiting" — sets the tone for a space designed to provoke reflection on mortality, and time is allocated for photographs inside.
