Full Day Tour in Porto Moniz with the Locals
Forests, waterfalls, volcanic pools, and genuine Madeiran culture — one full day off the beaten track
This Porto Moniz 4x4 full day tour takes you deep into the northwestern corner of Madeira, where ancient laurel forests, dramatic coastlines, and natural volcanic swimming pools reward those willing to venture beyond the usual tourist routes.
Departing from Ribeira Brava on the south coast, the route climbs through the island's interior before descending to the rugged north shore. An experienced local guide brings each stop to life, sharing knowledge of the island's history, traditions, and ecology accumulated over years of leading groups through this terrain.
Throughout the day you will encounter native flora that has survived for centuries, taste traditional Madeiran food and drink including the local spirit poncha, and — weather permitting — take a swim in the celebrated lava pools at Porto Moniz. A 15-minute easy walk along a levada is included in the itinerary.
Tour Highlights
Swim in the natural volcanic lava pools at Porto Moniz, where Atlantic waves crash against ancient basalt formations.
Walk through Fanal forest, a protected laurisilva reserve home to Ocotea foetens trees more than 500 years old.
Ride in a 4x4 vehicle across Paúl da Serra plateau and through remote villages inaccessible to standard tour coaches.
Sample traditional Madeiran cuisine and poncha, the island's signature distilled sugarcane drink, at local stops along the route.
Take in panoramic views over both the south and north coasts from the ridgeline above Serra d'Água valley.
Follow a section of a traditional levada irrigation channel on a flat, easy 15-minute walk suitable for most fitness levels.
Visit the site of Madeira's first hydroelectric power station at Serra d'Água, a landmark in the island's development history.
Itinerary
The journey begins on the south coast at Ribeira Brava. The road climbs steadily into the valley of Serra d'Água, passing the site of the island's first water-powered electricity station and offering sweeping views across the interior.
The route continues to the Estanquinhos viewpoint near Senhora do Rosário before crossing the broad highland plateau of Paúl da Serra. The elevated terrain provides open skies and a sense of distance from the coast below.
Fanal is a small volcanic crater classified as a resting reserve within the Madeira Natural Park. The ancient Ocotea foetens trees — some exceeding 500 years of age — form a dense, atmospheric canopy rare outside this archipelago.
Descending through Curral Falso, the group reaches the northern coastline at Ribeira da Janela, where dramatic rock formations rise from the sea. The valley cut by this ravine is among the longest on the island.
Porto Moniz is the centrepiece of the day. The natural lava swimming pools allow guests to swim in the ocean within the protection of the basalt rock barrier. The village also features a small aquarium and a historic fortress.
The return leg passes Porto do Seixal, a natural black sand beach set against a steep volcanic cliff, before continuing through São Vicente — one of the north coast's earliest settlements — and back toward the south.
