Exploring New Northwest Frontiers: Beyond Madeira in a 4x4 Jeep Tour
An open-top journey through ancient laurel forest, volcanic pools, and highland plateaus on the wild northwest coast of Madeira.
This northwest Madeira 4x4 jeep tour takes small groups of up to eight passengers deep into landscapes that coastal roads simply cannot reach. Over eight hours, the route threads through UNESCO-recognized laurel forest, dramatic sea cliffs, and the vast Paul da Serra plateau. Groups remain intimate by design, ensuring every viewpoint and forest clearing feels like a private discovery.
The journey moves through a sequence of contrasting environments: terraced valley parishes, misty highland moorland, and a rugged coastline shaped by Atlantic volcanics. Stops are chosen for their scenic and geological significance rather than tourist convenience, which means the itinerary regularly ventures off paved roads. Guides draw on more than two decades of experience navigating these tracks.
At Fanal, ancient Tilia trees draped in moss create a cathedral-like atmosphere that shifts dramatically with passing cloud. Later, the natural volcanic swimming pools of Porto Moniz offer a chance to swim in Atlantic-fed rock basins before the return leg follows the northern coastal road through Seixal and São Vicente.
Tour Highlights
Walk through Fanal, a moss-draped grove inside the Laurisilva UNESCO World Heritage forest where ancient Tilia trees frame every viewpoint.
Swim in the natural volcanic pools of Porto Moniz, carved from lava rock and fed directly by the Atlantic Ocean.
Reach Bica da Cana on the Paul da Serra plateau for simultaneous views of Madeira's north and south coasts on clear days.
Pass Véu da Noiva waterfall as it cascades down the northern sea cliffs, one of the most photographed natural landmarks on the island.
Travel off paved roads in an open-top 4x4 to hidden viewpoints and rural parishes rarely visited on standard excursions.
Experience the atmospheric Estanquinhos ponds on Paul da Serra, frequently enveloped in low mist and ideal for birdwatching.
Visit Ribeira da Janela where distinctive offshore rock stacks rise from the sea alongside a fertile valley laced with waterfalls and natural pools.
Itinerary
The route begins in the interior valley of Serra de Água, a parish whose name reflects the streams and levadas that lace its steep hillsides. Tabua, on a plateau above, follows with terraced agricultural landscapes and views that define rural Madeiran life.
The 4x4 climbs to Paul da Serra, Madeira's largest plateau at around 1,400 metres, where rolling moorland replaces the island's characteristic steep valleys. Bica da Cana viewpoint and the misty Estanquinhos ponds are the main stops on this open highland terrain.
Deep in the northwest highlands, Fanal is a clearing of centuries-old Tilia trees inside the Laurisilva UNESCO World Heritage forest. Moss covers every surface and low cloud frequently drifts through, creating conditions that make this one of the most distinctive natural environments on the island.
The descent to the northwest coast leads to Porto Moniz, where volcanic rock formations create a series of natural seawater pools. Guests have time to swim in the clear Atlantic-fed basins before continuing east along the coast road.
Seixal's Poço das Lesmas natural pool sits beneath dramatic cliffs, while nearby Ribeira da Janela is named for the distinctive window-shaped rock stacks visible offshore. The valley here runs with small waterfalls and natural pools before meeting the sea.
The return leg passes Véu da Noiva waterfall, which spills directly over the coastal cliffs into the ocean below. São Vicente, a valley town flanked by high green mountains, marks the final scenic stop before heading back south.
