Etna and Taormina Tour: Volcanic Craters and a Hilltop Jewel
From lunar lava fields at 2,000 metres to the ancient theatre of one of Sicily's most celebrated towns
This Mount Etna and Taormina day tour combines a guided walk across one of Europe's most active volcanoes with three hours of free exploration in Taormina, giving travellers a full picture of eastern Sicily in a single day. The route climbs through native vegetation, past lava flows and dormant craters, before descending to the Ionian coast. Difficulty is rated easy, making it accessible for most fitness levels.
The volcanic flank above Rifugio Sapienza presents a landscape unlike anywhere else in Italy. Centuries of eruptions have left a patchwork of hardened lava, volcanic ash, basalt outcrops and plant species found nowhere outside this environment. The scale of the terrain — and the silence — is striking even for experienced travellers.
Taormina occupies a dramatic clifftop position overlooking the Ionian Sea, and its mix of Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman heritage makes it one of the most layered destinations in the Mediterranean. The free-exploration format allows visitors to set their own pace across the Greek Theatre, the Botanic Garden, Isola Bella and the town's narrow shopping streets.
All guides and drivers hold certifications as required under Italian law, and the operator applies health and safety protocols aligned with WHO and Italian Government guidelines throughout the journey.

Itinerary
The tour departs from your hotel in Catania with pickup and transfer service included. The drive heads southwest toward the slopes of Mount Etna, passing through the surrounding towns and agricultural land of the Etnean foothills.
The route passes through Nicolosi, a village situated at the base of Etna. This is the starting point of the 1669 eruption, one of the most destructive in recorded Sicilian history, which destroyed several villages and reached the outskirts of Catania.
From Rifugio Sapienza, the guided walk explores the Silvestri Craters and the surrounding volcanic terrain. The landscape includes lateral craters, hardened lava fields, a large basalt mine and native plant species unique to the Etna environment.
After the guided volcanic section, the group transfers north along the coast to Taormina. The drive offers views of the Ionian coastline and the surrounding Sicilian countryside.
Visitors have three hours to explore Taormina independently. Key sites include the Greek Theatre (entrance ticket required), the public Botanic Garden, Isola Bella, historic churches and panoramic viewpoints over the sea and Etna.
The group reconvenes for the transfer back to Catania, with arrival expected in the late afternoon. Drop-off is at the original pickup location.
