Day Trip to Cretan History and Culture with Pottery Workshop
A full-day journey through ancient monasteries, archaeological museums, artisan workshops, and sacred caves in the heart of Crete.
This Cretan history and culture day trip takes you from the resilient walls of the Arkadi Monastery to the shadowed chambers of Melidoni Cave, weaving together more than four millennia of Cretan civilization into a single, coherent journey. Along the way, you will handle raw clay, press olive oil, and stand inside rooms where history was lived and lost. No superlatives are needed — the places speak for themselves.
The route passes through Margarites village, one of the few remaining settlements in Crete where pottery is still practiced as a living craft rather than a tourist performance. At the Tsikalario workshop, local artisan Miss Helen guides visitors through the techniques her family has refined across multiple generations, and every participant has the chance to shape their own ceramic piece to take home.
The excursion is rated easy in terms of physical effort, though the depth of content is considerable. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the sites include uneven monastery courtyards, cave pathways with moderate lighting, and village cobblestones. The pace allows time for independent exploration at each stop.
Tour Highlights
Visit the Monastery of Arkadi, a symbol of Cretan resistance against Ottoman rule and home to a museum of icons, relics, and historic weapons.
Explore the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna, the first archaeological site museum in Crete, tracing everyday life from 3000 BC to 1300 AD.
Take part in a hands-on pottery session at the Tsikalario workshop in Margarites village and create your own ceramic piece.
Tour a traditional olive oil manufactory and learn about the evolution of olive oil production from ancient methods to the present day.
Descend into Melidoni Cave, a site of Minoan worship and the scene of a tragic Ottoman siege in 1824, where an ossuary marks those who perished.
Taste freshly pressed Cretan olive oil on-site at the manufactory, guided by local producers.
Stroll freely through the traditional village of Margarites, with time for lunch or independent exploration of local craft shops.
Itinerary
Approximately 30 minutes after departure from Rethymno, the group arrives at the Monastery of Arkadi. One hour of free time allows visitors to explore the baroque facade, the interior church, and the small museum containing icons, monastic relics, and weapons from the 1866 revolt.
The next stop is the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna, the first archaeological site museum on the island. Exhibits span more than four thousand years, from the Bronze Age through the Byzantine period, presenting everyday objects and artworks recovered from local excavations.
In the village of Margarites, artisan Miss Helen leads a guided demonstration at the Tsikalario pottery workshop, followed by a hands-on session where each visitor shapes their own ceramic. Free time in the village follows, with options for lunch or a walk through the craft-lined lanes.
A visit to a local olive oil producer reveals the traditional and modern methods used to press Cretan olive oil. Visitors taste the product directly and learn about its cultural and culinary significance to the island.
The final destination is Melidoni Cave, set at 220 metres above sea level and rich in stalactites and stalagmites. The cave served as a Minoan place of worship for the bronze giant Talos and later became the site of an Ottoman massacre in January 1824, commemorated by an ossuary in the central chamber.
The group returns to Rethymno between 16:30 and 17:00, concluding a full day that has moved through nearly five millennia of Cretan history.
