Dream Boat Tour: Cinque Terre and Gulf of Poets by Sea
Discover the most spectacular coastline in Italy from the deck of a private boat, exploring hidden coves, colorful villages, and crystal-clear waters in a single unforgettable day.
A Cinque Terre boat tour from La Spezia offers one of the most rewarding ways to experience the legendary Ligurian coastline. Gliding past cliffs that plunge directly into the sea, guests witness panoramas that are simply not accessible from any land-based trail.
The itinerary covers the Gulf of Poets and the five celebrated villages of Cinque Terre, beginning with the lesser-known gem of Fezzano and building toward the iconic terraced hamlets of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. Along the way, the route traces mussel and oyster farms, ancient coastal settlements, and towering volcanic rock formations that define this UNESCO-listed stretch of shore.
Your captain was born and raised in this region and brings firsthand knowledge of every bay, current, and anchorage along the coast. The experience is designed to feel personal and unhurried, with swimming stops, local food and wine served on board, and the flexibility to adapt to sea conditions in real time.
Tour Highlights
Swim in crystalline waters at Le Rosse, a red ironstone cliff where shallow rocky seabeds make for exceptional snorkeling.
Go ashore in Monterosso al Mare for 90 minutes to explore the oldest of the Cinque Terre villages at your own pace.
View the Via dell'Amore from the sea, the recently restored clifftop path connecting Manarola and Riomaggiore.
Circumnavigate the Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto island archipelago, accessible only by boat and rich in military history.
Photograph the multicolored facades of Portovenere from the water, including the medieval church of San Pietro at the tip of the peninsula.
Enjoy locally sourced food and wine served on deck during rest stops, with background music to accompany the scenery.
Travel with a local captain who adjusts the route based on weather and sea conditions to keep all guests safe throughout the day.
Itinerary
The tour begins in La Spezia and heads toward Fezzano, a quiet village inside the Gulf of La Spezia that offers an authentic local atmosphere far removed from the busier tourist circuit. Continuing along the coast, the boat passes near the sea wall that protects the inner harbor and the characteristic mussel and oyster farming areas typical of this bay.
The boat arrives at Portovenere, a colorful and historically significant village perched at the tip of the promontory. Guests have time to photograph the pastel-painted houses and admire the Church of San Pietro, which stands at the very edge of the headland overlooking the open sea. Just behind the church lies Byron's Cave, long associated with the Romantic poet Lord Byron and beloved by locals as one of the most atmospheric spots on this coast.
The boat anchors at Le Rosse, a striking rust-red cliff face whose color derives from high iron content in the rock. The clear water and rocky seabed create ideal conditions for swimming and snorkeling, and this stop also serves as the main rest break where local food, wine, and other beverages are served on deck.
Entering the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area, the first stop is a 90-minute landing in Monterosso al Mare, where guests can have lunch ashore, browse the old town, and explore local shops. The boat then moves along the coast, pausing for photographs at Vernazza, Corniglia on its clifftop promontory, and Manarola, which also offers a swimming stop. The route concludes the Cinque Terre leg at Riomaggiore, with a final photo stop and a view of the Via dell'Amore from the water.
Returning toward Portovenere, the boat completes a full circuit of the three islands of the archipelago. The southern cliffs of Palmaria rise dramatically from the sea, while the smaller Tino island, currently administered by the Italian Navy, is crowned by a lighthouse that has served as a navigational landmark for centuries. The final swimming stop takes place near Tinetto, a small rocky islet reachable only by boat, in remarkably clear water.
After the final stop at the archipelago, the boat makes its way back to the departure point in La Spezia, completing approximately seven and a half hours on the water. The captain may adapt the return timing and route based on sea conditions and guest preferences throughout the day.
