Caldeirão Verde Walk: Laurissilva Forest and Waterfall Trail
A seven-hour journey through ancient laurel forest to the awe-inspiring Green Cauldron waterfall.
The Caldeirão Verde Walk leads you through one of Madeira's most iconic levada trails, beginning at the historic Queimadas Forest House and culminating at a dramatic waterfall cascading into a crystalline lagoon. This moderate route rewards walkers with continuous forest cover, mountain panoramas, and a genuine sense of wilderness. It stands among the most celebrated hiking experiences on the island.
The path follows the levada channel through the heart of the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva forest, a rare subtropical laurel woodland that dates back millions of years. Shades of green dominate the entire trail, broken only by distant views over deep valleys, the village of São Jorge, and occasional waterfalls threading down mossy cliffs. The air is cool and humid, carrying the scent of ferns and ancient trees throughout the walk.
Several tunnels are carved directly into the volcanic rock along the route, requiring walkers to crouch and navigate in low light. A headlamp and sturdy footwear are not optional accessories on this trail — they are essential. The experience inside the tunnels adds a sense of adventure that contrasts sharply with the open, sun-dappled stretches of levada walking.
At the end of the outward leg, the Caldeirão Verde waterfall reveals itself in full force, plunging into a deep, still pool of emerald-green water enclosed by towering rock walls. The scale of the natural amphitheatre is difficult to convey in words. Many walkers spend considerable time at the waterfall simply absorbing the atmosphere before retracing steps back to Queimadas.

Itinerary
The walk begins at the Queimadas Forest House, a scenic picnic area nestled at altitude in the centre of Madeira. The guide briefs the group on the route, safety in the tunnels, and what to expect at the waterfall. The levada channel is picked up directly from this starting point.
The first section of the trail moves immediately into dense laurel forest, where tree canopies filter the light and mosses coat every surface. The path is well-defined and largely flat, following the levada with gentle undulations. Views open periodically over the valleys below.
Several tunnels punctuate the mid-section of the hike, carved through volcanic basalt where the levada passes through solid cliff faces. Walkers use headlamps and proceed in single file through passages of varying length and height. These sections require care but are manageable for most hikers.
Between tunnels and denser forest sections, the trail opens onto viewpoints offering broad perspectives across mountain ridges and the coastline. The village of São Jorge is visible from certain elevated points along the route. These pauses provide natural rest opportunities for the group.
The trail concludes at the Caldeirão Verde, a towering waterfall enclosed within a natural rock basin. The waterfall feeds a still, green lagoon at its base, creating one of the most visually striking settings in Madeira. Time is allowed here to rest, observe wildlife, and take in the surroundings.
The return follows the same levada path in reverse, offering a different perspective on familiar sections of forest and valley. The guide leads the group at a comfortable pace back to the Queimadas Forest House. Total walking time for the return is similar to the outward journey.
